New Delhi, Nov 27 (NationPress) Brisbane Heat has officially announced that prominent Indian cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues will not be rejoining for the remainder of the WBBL season. This decision comes as a result of her request to stay in India after the postponement of her teammate Smriti Mandhana's wedding.
Following the Heat's match against the Hobart Hurricanes ten days prior, Rodrigues returned home to partake in the wedding festivities, which were ultimately canceled due to the illness of Mandhana's father. The 24-year-old has chosen to remain in India to support the family, a decision the Heat organization fully respects.
CEO Terry Svenson expressed understanding of the fans' disappointment at not being able to see more of Rodrigues, who was the top international draft pick for the club this year and is in her second season with Brisbane. He emphasized that the franchise’s main concern is her wellbeing.
In a statement from the franchise, Svenson remarked, “It’s been a difficult time for Jemi. Although it’s unfortunate that she will not return for the WBBL, we were more than willing to honor her request to stay in India. The Heat organization wishes her and Smriti Mandhana's family all the best moving forward.”
“Jemi expressed her regret at not being able to come back and conveyed her gratitude to both the club and the Heat fans for their understanding of the situation. She has stayed in contact with her teammates and wished them well for the remaining matches,” he added.
The Heat, currently seeking their first victory of the season after a gut-wrenching last-ball loss to the Adelaide Strikers earlier in the week, will now focus on their upcoming matchup against the Sydney Sixers at Adelaide Oval this Friday.
All-rounder Grace Harris is set to return to the squad after being rested for workload management, taking the place of Lily Bassingthwaighte as Brisbane aims to turn their season around.
