Mumbai, Nov 26 (NationPress) Kajol and Twinkle Khanna hosted World Cup champions Jemimah Rodrigues and Shafali Verma for a unique episode of "Two Much with Kajol".
During this entertaining episode, Jemimah shared how destiny nearly led her towards hockey instead of cricket.
She mentioned that she had initially played cricket before trying out hockey, but after relocating to Bhandup from Bandra, her uncle motivated her to take up hockey. She quickly excelled in hockey and even earned a spot on the state team.
Jemimah explained, "We had moved from Bandra to Bhandup due to the long commute. It was a significant change since living in Bandra was quite costly, and we belonged to a middle-class family. When I arrived there, one of my uncles gifted me a hockey stick and said, ‘Go play; my daughter also plays.’ I played and started to excel in hockey as well. The amusing part is that I got selected for the state hockey team before the state cricket team. My friends thought, 'Okay, Jemi is going to represent India in hockey.'"
However, when the time came to choose, Jemimah opted for cricket.
Discussing her decision, she remarked, “At that point, I had advanced further in cricket than in hockey, so we decided to pursue cricket. Yet, my aspiration remains to play for both India.”
Looking back on her early cricket journey, Jemimah noted that when she started at a club, women's cricket was not widely recognized.
“There were no dedicated nets for girls. My father enrolled me in an academy where all the players were boys. I was the only girl among around 400 boys.”
Recalling some experiences, she added, “I remember during warm-ups, we would place our hands on each other's shoulders and swing our legs to enhance mobility. But no boys would come near me. Even when a boy did approach me, his friends would tease him about me. So, no one really engaged with me.”
