Did Jemimah Rodrigues Just Reach 2500 T20I Runs?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Adelaide, Feb 21 (NationPress) Indian cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues has officially crossed the 2500-run milestone in T20 Internationals, accomplishing this remarkable achievement during her performance against Australia in the decisive T20I of the series at the Adelaide Oval.
Prior to stepping onto the field at the No. 3 position for the third T20I, Rodrigues had gathered 2492 runs from 104 innings. In her 118th T20 International match, the Delhi Capitals captain surpassed the 2500-run mark with a stunning boundary off Kim Garth in the fifth over after opting to bat first.
With this achievement, Rodrigues has become only the fourth Indian woman cricketer to reach this remarkable milestone in women's T20Is, following in the footsteps of captain Harmanpreet Kaur, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, and opening batter Shafali Verma. Just earlier this week, Verma also reached the 2500 T20I run mark while scoring a brisk 29 off 23 balls in the Canberra T20I.
During the same match, Kaur also made headlines by becoming the most-capped international player in women's cricket. On February 19, in her 356th international match, the World Cup-winning captain surpassed New Zealand's legendary Suzie Bates for the record of the most international appearances by a woman.
Following Kaur and Bates, Ellyse Perry, who celebrated her historic 350th international appearance for Australia on Saturday, ranks third among women cricketers in terms of total matches played.
Perry made history as the first Australian woman to achieve 350 international games, marking her 20th year in the sport.
As for the ongoing series, the Indian team dismissed Australia for 133 at the SCG in the first match, quickly reaching 50/1 in just 5.1 overs before rain interrupted play. India was ahead of the DLS par score and managed to secure a victory, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.
Australia bounced back strongly at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. After being sent in to bat again, they set a challenging total, thanks to Georgia Voll's aggressive 88. Although they faltered towards the end of their innings, India began with a solid start. However, the Australian bowlers adjusted their pace effectively, triggering a collapse that allowed them to defend their score successfully and equalize the series.
Currently, both teams are engaged in the third and final T20I match of India's tour, with the Women in Blue reaching 101/1 in 12 overs, bolstered by Mandhana's powerful half-century and Rodrigues' explosive batting.
