Brisbane, Nov 29 (NationPress) The Brisbane Heat have suffered a significant setback with their captain Jess Jonassen officially unable to play for the remainder of the current WBBL season as she undergoes right shoulder surgery.
All-rounder Charli Knott will take over as captain for the last three matches of the season. The team, currently at the bottom of the points table with no victories, is looking to finish strong despite the challenges faced. The shoulder injury also played a crucial role in Jess, the left-arm spin bowling all-rounder, opting out of the recent WPL 2026 auction held in New Delhi.
“We thought I could manage with the support of our physio Jolandi Jacobs and the medical team, but as the competition progressed, it became clear that a change was necessary,” Jess explained.
“This has been a tough period for me, especially since it became evident I was struggling to compete at my expected level. However, I am determined to recover and return to the game with renewed vigor.”
“It’s reassuring to know I will have robust support during my recovery. Although this tournament hasn’t gone as planned, I am proud of how my team has fought and competed. I believe they will end the season positively,” Jess stated in a club announcement.
Charli will lead the Brisbane Heat for the first time in their upcoming match against the Adelaide Strikers at North Sydney Oval this Sunday. Previously, she served as the vice-captain this season and has also captained Australia A. Additionally, Nadine de Klerk will depart after Sunday’s match in preparation for South Africa’s upcoming white-ball series against Ireland, while Grace Harris is still managing a calf issue.
Jess is expected to be out for about three months, with hopes of returning for the Women’s National Cricket League season finale. Her state team, Queensland, is set to compete against Victoria on March 12 and 14, leading up to the final on March 21.
“Jess and the team have made significant efforts to keep her playing, and her dedication has been unwavering. The medical team has attempted to manage her shoulder throughout the competition, but it has reached a point where surgery is the best option, allowing her ample time to recover for the next season,” a spokesperson commented.
“While Jess recovers from her surgery, Charli Knott will lead the team in the remaining three WBBL matches, and we wish her all the best,” said Brisbane Heat CEO Terry Svenson.
