Jyoti to Captain the 20-Member Indian Team for Women’s Junior Asia Cup

New Delhi, Dec 1 (NationPress) Hockey India has officially announced a formidable 20-member team for the much-anticipated Women’s Junior Asia Cup, which is set to occur in Muscat, Oman, from December 7 to 15. The team will be led by captain Jyoti Singh, with Sakshi Rana appointed as vice-captain.

As the defending champions, India approaches the tournament with significant expectations after clinching their first title last year by defeating South Korea 2-1 in the final. This event also serves as a qualifier for the FIH Hockey Junior World Cup 2025.

In goal, goalkeepers Nidhi and Aditi Maheshwari will ensure a solid defensive line, while the backline will be anchored by Manisha, Jyoti Singh, Lalthantluangi, Pooja Sahoo, and Mamata Oram.

The midfield boasts a skilled ensemble, including Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke, Sunelita Toppo, Ishika, Rajni Kerketta, Sakshi Rana, and Khaidem Shileima Chanu. In the forward positions, India will count on Deepika, Beauty Dungdung, Kanika Siwach, Mumtaz Khan, and Lalrinpuii to spearhead their attack. Additionally, Binima Dhan and Himanshi Sharad Gawande have been designated as alternate players.

Many players bring invaluable experience from senior-level competitions, with Deepika, Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke, Sunelita Toppo, Mumtaz Khan, and Beauty Dungdung having previously represented the Indian Women’s Hockey Team at the senior level.

Commenting on the squad selection and the anticipated performance in the tournament, coach Tushar Khandker stated, 'This is a unique group that harmoniously blends experience with youthful talent. Several players have already demonstrated their capabilities on the senior stage, and their involvement will be vital in leading the team. Our strategy is to play aggressively and with discipline, approaching each match individually. We are confident in our preparations and believe this squad holds the potential to defend our title and bring pride to the nation once more.'

The tournament will showcase 10 teams split into two pools: India is placed in Pool A alongside China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Bangladesh, while Pool B includes South Korea, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, and Sri Lanka.

India will commence their campaign against Bangladesh in their opening match on December 8.
