Bengaluru, May 6 (NationPress) Karnataka Police have taken action against three fans of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for allegedly conducting a goat sacrifice in front of a cutout of cricketer Virat Kohli in the village of Mariyammanahalli, located in the Molakalmuru taluk of the Chitradurga district, as reported by officials on Tuesday.
The individuals arrested -- Sanna Palayya (22 years), Jayanna (23 years), and Tippe Swamy (28 years) -- are all residents of Mariyammanahalli.
This bizarre incident came to public attention after a video showcasing the ritual went viral on social media, following RCB's exhilarating victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
In the 20-second clip, one man can be seen holding a goat in front of Kohli’s cutout. As another fan cheers for RCB's win against CSK, the goat is slaughtered with a machete, and its blood is offered as a raktabhisheka (blood offering) to both the cutout and a poster of Kohli. A third individual is shown restraining the goat with a rope.
The video, shared on Instagram by a user named “call-me-143-kalki,” incited significant outrage online.
In response to the public backlash, the Molakalmuru police filed a case and apprehended the three individuals under applicable laws concerning animal cruelty.
RCB, widely recognized as one of the most beloved franchises in the IPL, boasts a dedicated following throughout Karnataka and beyond.
Even though the team has yet to secure the IPL title in its 18 seasons, recent victories, including a vital win over CSK, have reignited fans' hopes that this year might finally bring them the coveted trophy.
Celebrations escalated following RCB's triumph over CSK at their home ground, with fans now eager for the upcoming matches.
Authorities have condemned the incident, labeling it a troubling illustration of extreme and misguided fandom.
