Watford, May 6 (NationPress) Watford FC has officially announced the exit of head coach Tom Cleverley after the team's failure to secure a spot in the promotion play-offs of the Championship.
Cleverley assumed the role of head coach in March 2024, initially stepping in as an interim before being appointed permanently after guiding Watford away from a potential relegation threat.
During the 2025 season, Watford was in contention for promotion until the new year, but they could only manage five victories, resulting in a 14th place finish in the Championship standings.
“Watford FC confirms the departure of Tom Cleverley as Head Coach,” the statement read.
Under his leadership, the Hornets experienced a surge in performance towards the end of the 2023/24 season before his full-time hiring last summer.
“At one point, the Golden Boys were in the play-off picture, but sadly, the team’s performance and results declined, achieving only five wins in 2025.”
“There will be no further comments from the club until a new appointment is made,” the statement continued.
The former midfielder for Manchester United, Everton, and Watford, Cleverley took over after Valerien Ismael exited. During his tenure, he oversaw 60 matches, winning 20 and losing 26.
“We thank Tom for his service—not only as Head Coach but for his contributions as a player and staff member at Watford.”
“Now is the right time for a change as we look to develop what we believe is a young and talented squad that can learn from this season's Championship experience.”
“Working closely with Tom has been a privilege; his insights into the game and passion for the club are commendable. He deserves recognition for his contributions, and I’m confident he has a bright future ahead.”
“Tom will always hold a place in Watford’s history due to his significant achievements over the years,” stated Sporting Director Gian Luca Nani.
