Ishan Kishan struck a commanding 79 off 46 deliveries to anchor Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to a dominant 55-run victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a high-scoring IPL 2026 encounter at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on Friday. The win propelled SRH's confidence heading into the playoffs, while RCB — despite the defeat — held the top spot in the league standings on net run rate.

Kishan's Innings at No. 3

Batting at No. 3, Kishan provided the crucial spine to SRH's innings as the side posted a mammoth 255/4. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, speaking on JioHotstar, was effusive in his praise: 'The improvement that Ishan Kishan has shown throughout the season and the way he has taken responsibility on different surfaces and in different match situations... Now at No. 3 he is playing a very vital role for Sunrisers Hyderabad and looked like a much complete batter.'

Pathan specifically highlighted Kishan's evolution against spin bowling — historically a relative weakness — as the defining upgrade this season: 'He has been phenomenal against spin, especially on the off-side, and the minute you add that with his strength through the on-side, it's extremely difficult to contain him and at one point in the innings, he looked in complete control.'

Abhishek Sharma set the tone with a blistering 56 off just 22 deliveries in the Powerplay, while Travis Head chipped in with a brisk 26 off 16 balls. Once Kishan consolidated the middle overs, Heinrich Klaasen shifted gears emphatically, hammering 51 off 24 deliveries to accelerate SRH past 250.

Pathan singled out Klaasen's tactical awareness as a standout feature: 'What stood out in Heinrich Klaasen's innings was his awareness to the situation of the game and he identified a bowler in Josh Hazlewood that was feeling the pressure and Josh hasn't been at his best in the last couple of games, so Heinrich Klaasen jumped at it.' The former India bowler added that Klaasen's ability to punish below-par deliveries still required a batter in exceptional touch to execute.

Kohli-Head Flashpoint

The contest was not without its flashpoints. A heated on-field exchange between Virat Kohli and Travis Head during RCB's chase drew attention, with Pathan contextualising the incident as part of the game's competitive fabric: 'Virat Kohli loves playing cricket with that aggressive Australian way of being intense, with banter, with competitiveness and with emotion out there on the field and at that time, he was challenging Travis Head to come out and bowl few balls for not staying as a substituted fielder.'

Pathan concluded that such exchanges are routine in high-stakes fixtures: 'Incidents like this are a very normal part of the game of cricket in highly competitive games, especially when the two sides are vying for a top place on the points table.'
