Kolkata Knight Riders snapped Gujarat Titans' five-match winning streak with a commanding 29-run victory at Eden Gardens on Saturday, 16 May, lifting KKR to sixth place on the IPL 2026 points table and keeping their playoff push firmly alive. GT skipper Shubman Gill conceded that his side's fielding failures — not the pitch — decided the contest.

Gill's Candid Admission

Gill did not spare his team in his post-match assessment. 'Looking at the wicket, 200-210 was par score, but we dropped too many catches. Pitch was good, the odd one was stopping, but I felt we batted well to get to the score we did. No concerns, but our fielding could've been a lot better,' the GT captain said.

He was equally blunt about the consequences. 'We set a certain standard, and dropping 3 sitters — we didn't deserve to win this one. Looking at it that way, best to have a game like this now than in the Qualifiers,' Gill added, signalling that GT will use the defeat as a corrective ahead of their return to Ahmedabad.

Allen and Raghuvanshi Power KKR to 247/2

Finn Allen was the principal beneficiary of GT's fielding lapses, having been dropped twice before going on to smash a blazing 93. Youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi complemented him with a career-best 82 not out, as KKR posted a formidable 247/2. Cameron Green also contributed to the batting onslaught that left GT's bowlers with an insurmountable target.

Raghuvanshi reflected on his knock: 'Got so easy for me, just had to give him (Allen) a strike and watch from the other end. That was my role at the start of the innings.' The 20-year-old also noted the demands of his keeping duties, adding: 'I'm not used to the keeping duties; it's taking everything out of me.'

Rahane Credits Intent and Belief

KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane was effusive in praise for his batting unit. 'Very good game, really happy with two points. Amazing to see Allen, Angkrish, and Green's knocks. Credit goes to these batters. Intent was amazing. Don't forget they're a quality bowling attack. It was amazing to see batters going out there and dominating,' Rahane said.

He also singled out the bowlers, specifically Saurabh Dubey and Sunil Narine. 'It's all about trusting their ability. All these guys have been doing well in the domestic season. Saurabh Dubey played well in the Vidarbha league,' Rahane noted, adding that Varun Chakravarthy deserved credit for playing through a sore foot.

Narine Reaches 200-Match Milestone

Player of the Match Sunil Narine marked a milestone appearance with a disciplined spell of 2 for 29, which proved critical in restricting GT. 'It comes with hard work. The guys have been training really well, putting in the hard yards, and it's showing,' said Narine, who reflected on reaching 200 IPL appearances: 'Being a senior guy, God has given me the talent and health to play 200; hopefully, I play many more.'

Points Table and What's Next

The result leaves KKR in sixth place, behind Punjab Kings who occupy fourth. GT, who had thrived in bowler-friendly conditions during their winning run, were undone by Eden Gardens' batting surface — a surface Raghuvanshi called 'great', adding he hoped to 'play on these surfaces every game.' GT now head back to Ahmedabad, where Gill said the team will assess conditions and plan for their next fixture. With the playoff picture tightening, both sides have little margin for error in the remaining league games.
