IPL 2026: GT Captain Shubman Gill Seeks Improved Finishing After Kolkata Victory
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, April 18 (NationPress) Shubman Gill, the captain of Gujarat Titans, guided his team to a dominant five-wicket victory against Kolkata Knight Riders. However, he acknowledged that there is still potential for improvement in finishing the game.
Gill delivered an impressive performance, scoring 86 runs off 50 balls at the Narendra Modi Stadium, leading the chase of 181 with a combination of eight fours and four sixes. Despite securing the win in just 19.4 overs, the opener expressed dissatisfaction with how the innings concluded.
“Ideally, we wished to complete the chase at least an over or two earlier, and I was somewhat let down by my dismissal. I aimed to be present until the end to finish the match. In the next opportunity, I hope to achieve that,” Gill commented post-match.
This victory marked Gujarat Titans’ third straight win of the season, following earlier successes against Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants. With six points from five matches, GT climbed to fourth place on the points table, while KKR lingered at the bottom with a mere point.
Gill’s contributions have been pivotal to GT’s achievements. His latest innings secured him the Player of the Match title and enabled him to claim the Orange Cap from Virat Kohli. The GT captain has amassed 251 runs in four matches, boasting an impressive average of 62.75, which includes three half-centuries.
Reflecting on his pre-season preparation, Gill shared that a focused break enhanced his game beyond mere technique. “I had a couple of months before this. I concentrated on my fitness and worked on the mental aspects of the game, striving to improve not just technically but tactically too,” he stated.
Gill also praised the exceptional bowling efforts of Mohammad Siraj and Kagiso Rabada.
“Honestly, the way both of them (Siraj and Rabada) bowled made it seem like they could claim a wicket with every delivery. Allowing them to bowl an extra over proved beneficial for us. I noticed the ball was moving a bit, so I checked with them about bowling an additional over, considering the heat made it challenging to bowl three overs consecutively.”
