Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 24 (NationPress) The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have taken the momentous step of retiring jersey number 12 in honor of the iconic all-rounder Andre Russell, affectionately known as the Eternal Knight. This decision recognizes his invaluable contributions to the franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
This special announcement was made during their preseason event, Knights Unplugged 3.0, held on Tuesday evening.
Russell, who has rejoined the KKR family as a power coach for the upcoming season, had a remarkable 12-year career with the team, playing from 2014 to 2025.
With his distinctive hairstyle and extraordinary skills on the cricket field, the West Indian became one of KKR's standout players, significantly contributing to their triumph in two IPL championships (2014, 2024).
During his tenure with KKR, Russell participated in 140 IPL matches, accumulating 2,651 runs with a striking average of 174.17 and capturing 123 wickets. He is the second all-rounder in IPL history to surpass 2000 runs and 100 wickets. His explosive performances earned him the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2019, when he scored 510 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 204.81 and an average of 56.66.
Notably, Russell is a two-time ICC Men's T20 World Cup champion (2012, 2016) and holds the record for the best bowling figures by a KKR bowler in IPL history, achieving 5 for 15 against the Mumbai Indians in 2021. With 122 wickets, he ranks as the second most successful bowler for KKR, trailing only Sunil Narine (192 wickets).
On this significant occasion, Venky Mysore, CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders, stated, “Our relationship with Andre Russell has been extensive, both professionally and personally. He has given us countless reasons to celebrate over the years. The number 12 is uniquely tied to Dre Russ, and we felt it was only fitting to retire it as a tribute. In line with Knight Riders tradition, we wish to start a new legacy in his honor.”
An emotional Andre Russell, now KKR's Power Coach, expressed, “After over a decade of incredible achievements with this franchise, I felt a wave of emotions watching the tribute video. Being part of two championship-winning teams with KKR is an amazing experience. Winning a World Cup is special, but winning the IPL holds a different significance. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to this franchise for making this journey unforgettable for me.”
