New Delhi, April 10 (NationPress) Andre Russell, the iconic all-rounder for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has revealed that his debut match-day as the team's power coach during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 was quite an adjustment. He admitted feeling somewhat lost in the dugout, unsure of his role. “During my first game on match day, I felt a bit out of place. I was just trying to remind myself that I’m now a coach… it was a unique experience. I’ve been in situations where I know I could step in, and I had to keep myself in check,” Russell shared during an open conversation with KKR assistant coach Shane Watson.

When elaborating on his coaching duties, Russell pointed out that he prioritizes positional awareness over drastic technical changes. “No team has ever employed a power coach before. My responsibility is to emphasize the significance of boundaries in T20 cricket, especially sixes. I aim to position players correctly for various deliveries that bowlers might attempt to trick them with,” he explained.

“The goal is not to alter a player's technique or teach them how to swing their bat but to enhance their power-hitting abilities. So far, it’s been an incredible journey,” he added.

Despite the shift in his responsibilities, Russell stressed his strong emotional bond with KKR, a franchise he has proudly represented for over a decade. “KKR feels like my second home. That moment was one of the most moving experiences in my cricket career, honestly. Winning World Cups and IPL trophies is fantastic, but this connection is truly special… it’s my home away from home,” he reflected.

Watson, who has shared numerous competitive encounters with Russell throughout their careers, praised the former all-rounder’s influence on the game. “Few players have pushed the boundaries of being a fast-bowling all-rounder like Dre has. I hold immense respect for him because I understand the challenges involved. We've had intense rivalries over the years, but I have the utmost admiration for Dre,” he remarked.
