New Delhi, March 21 (NationPress) The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who have clinched the IPL title three times, faced another significant setback on Saturday as their fast bowling lineup was further weakened ahead of the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, with Indian pacer Akash Deep officially ruled out for 2026.

Acquired by KKR for a base price of Rs 1 crore during last year's mini-auction in Abu Dhabi, Akash Deep’s absence is a confirmed blow to the team. A franchise official informed IANS, “Yes, Akash Deep is ruled out for the upcoming IPL season. He’s not left yet for the BCCI CoE in Bengaluru for rehab, but it’s confirmed that he’s unavailable for this season.”

Notably, Akash Deep did not participate in KKR’s pre-season training camp, which commenced in Kolkata on March 18, and he was absent from the intra-squad match at Eden Gardens on Friday evening.

Sources from IANS reveal that Akash Deep is believed to be suffering from a stress reaction in his lower back, an injury that typically requires 6-12 weeks of recovery. This injury reportedly developed while he was playing for Bengal during their Ranji Trophy semifinal against Jammu & Kashmir held at the Bengal Cricket Academy Ground in Kalyani from February 15-18.

This injury intensifies KKR’s fast-bowling issues, as India’s seam-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana is already out following surgery for a meniscus tear. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan bowler Matheesha Pathirana is still awaiting clearance from his board due to a shoulder injury that curtailed his participation in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup.

Currently, KKR’s fast bowling lineup includes Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik, Blessing Muzarabani, and Kartik Tyagi, with all-rounders Cameron Green and Ramandeep Singh providing additional seam options. KKR is set to kick off their IPL 2026 journey against the five-time champions Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 29.

In response to the current fast-bowling crisis, KKR is actively seeking replacements and has been conducting trials at Eden Gardens. Players such as Navdeep Saini, Akash Madhwal, Simarjeet Singh, Sandeep Warrier, KM Asif, and Sunil Kumar have been attending these trials to fill the gaps left by the injuries to Rana and Akash Deep.

Point of View

The recent injury to Akash Deep underscores the growing challenges within KKR's fast-bowling department. The franchise must act swiftly to address these gaps if they hope to maintain competitiveness in the IPL 2026 season.
