Kolkata, March 20 (NationPress) Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane conveyed an optimistic yet thoughtful perspective, stressing the significance of positivity, flexibility, and confidence in a cohesive team as the franchise aims for a remarkable season in the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.

Speaking to the press alongside head coach Abhishek Nayar, assistant coach Shane Watson, and mentor Dwayne Bravo, Rahane underscored the strength of KKR’s batting lineup. “The batting group that we have this year is truly exceptional. Most of our players, including the overseas stars, are entering the season in fine form after a successful World Cup. We’re eagerly anticipating the season, and we’ll see how our combinations develop,” he stated.

In the face of leadership challenges, Rahane maintained his composure. “Every season comes with its own set of expectations and hurdles, whether you’re a player or a captain. The key for me has always been to remain optimistic. Since taking on the captaincy last year, I am thankful to the franchise for entrusting me with this role. I embrace every challenge as a chance to grow and contribute. I have always viewed challenges as opportunities to excel, and I will strive to perform my best as both a player and a leader.”

Reflecting on areas for growth, the KKR skipper highlighted the importance of establishing momentum. “As a team, we aim to start strong and maintain our momentum. It’s a lengthy tournament, and we don’t want to peak too soon. Our goal is to play an engaging style of cricket. With both international and domestic players joining the squad, who are in good form, team management is confident about doing well this season.”

The inclusion of all-rounder Cameron Green adds versatility to the squad, and Rahane confirmed that the clarity of roles would develop over time. “We will have comprehensive discussions with Cameron Green to clarify his position and responsibilities. He is a talented player who can bat in various spots and provide crucial overs. Over the upcoming practice games, we’ll gain better insights on how to best utilize him within our team structure.”

Meanwhile, Watson pointed out the wealth of options available as both a benefit and a challenge. “The beauty of this KKR squad lies in the abundance of incredible batting talent we possess this season. It’s a wealth of options, and determining how to fit them all into the lineup is the ultimate challenge. We need to establish our initial combination quickly and make minor adjustments as the tournament progresses. With Cameron Green’s quality as an all-rounder, we want him to seize any opportunities that come his way. We have a blend of seasoned players and youthful enthusiasm, making it exciting to see how it unfolds throughout the tournament.”

With the potential absence of Andre Russell in a finishing role, Nayar views it as an opportunity for others to rise. “Andre Russell has been a pivotal player for this franchise for many years. Replicating his contributions in T20 cricket will be challenging. However, this season presents opportunities. We have Rinku and Ramandeep, who can step up and perform for the franchise, as they have before. Playing in the IPL carries pressure, but we want our players to realize their potential and establish their legacy. Young players in our setup can secure their place in the franchise’s history. Rinku has taken on that responsibility for India and KKR, and Ramandeep has previously delivered for us in our championship season. We are hopeful they can replicate those performances and create something remarkable for the franchise.”

Nayar also shared insights about his role within a star-studded support team. “The IPL offers the chance to collaborate with legends like Watto (Watson), DJ (Bravo), Tim Southee, and Dre Russ (Russell). The players will benefit from the wealth of knowledge these individuals bring. While my title may have changed, the essence of my role remains similar; you just face more scrutiny for the outcomes. However, having these accomplished figures alongside me, who have excelled in this format, is fantastic. With such a leadership group, both Ajinkya and I know we can rely on the entire support team to help navigate the challenges that arise throughout the season.”

Regarding the need for a strong start, especially with an opening match against the Mumbai Indians, Nayar emphasized the importance of focusing on the process rather than the pressure. “A quote I once heard is, ‘Keep your head where your feet are.’ Currently, we’re at Eden Gardens, so our priority is the practice match that will prepare us for the first game in Mumbai. We want to ensure the team is well-prepared. As a support team, we are still assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the squad. Our goal is to be in the best position to allow this team to excel. While expectations exist, the focus on preparing mentally for the game in Mumbai is more crucial than worrying about the opponent. It’s about playing our best cricket, regardless of who we face.”

Watson also commented on the evolution of T20 batting. “A significant part of this evolution revolves around the combinations and the talent within the team. We observed last season with Sunrisers Hyderabad that even when conditions at their home ground changed, they attempted to bat their way to a high total, which increased the challenge and risk. However, cricket hasn’t changed dramatically. Yes, some batters have taken more risks, but ultimately, you must assess the conditions and find ways to score quickly without taking unnecessary risks. With the batters we have, there’s no doubt they can aim for higher scores. Ultimately, we want a batting unit that performs at its best and scores more runs than the opponent.”

Rahane echoed that sentiment. “Recent trends show that scoring rates are increasing, but I completely align with Watson’s view. As a batting group, we must assess the conditions and play accordingly. Planning to score 250 runs before the match begins isn’t practical. It’s about simplicity, respecting the opposition, and giving it our all. The game is evolving, yet the fundamentals remain constant.”

On the bowling front, Bravo maintained a positive outlook despite injury concerns. “In any tournament, losing key bowlers is something you can’t plan for but must accept. Fortunately, Indian cricket boasts considerable depth. There are players like Umran Malik and Kartik Tyagi, who have represented India and played in the IPL before. They’re still young and promising talents, so I’m eager to work with this group of fast bowlers. We have the best spin duo in the competition. From a bowling perspective, we will manage well. Vaibhav had an outstanding season last year and has been the leader of our attack. While we’ve lost some key players, we’re confident in our ability to fill those gaps.”

Nayar emphasized that the immediate challenge lies in refining the combinations. “I can’t predict how the tournament will unfold, but initially, it’s about ensuring we have a fit playing eleven and optimizing our combinations. With new combinations in the IPL, positioning them effectively is vital for success. That will be our challenge, and we’ll adapt as necessary. Once the foundation is established, we can build momentum as the tournament progresses.”

KKR is set to launch their IPL 2026 campaign on March 29 with a match against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium.

After their opener, KKR will return to Eden Gardens, where they are scheduled to play evening matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants.
