Bristol, July 2 (NationPress) Following England's second consecutive T20I loss to India, former captain Heather Knight has advocated for significant modifications to the playing XI, emphasizing the need to bring in bowling all-rounder Charlie Dean for the remaining matches of the T20I series against India.
England faced a 24-run defeat in the second T20I at Bristol on Tuesday, placing them 2-0 down in the five-match series and facing the grim possibility of their first bilateral T20I series defeat at home since 2023.
While England displayed some improvement compared to their initial defeat, Knight asserts that changes are crucial to effectively combat a formidable Indian batting lineup.
"Charlie Dean is among your top five bowlers and she has to be included. She has been exceptional against Smriti Mandhana with an impressive strike rate in previous matches during the Powerplay, consistently taking wickets and excelling in the field. I anticipate Charlie Dean will be part of the squad. In my opinion, she should have been a starter for this series as she is a remarkable player," Knight shared with Sky Sports.
Currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, Knight highlighted that Linsey Smith, who has struggled to make an impact in this series, could be the player to step aside for Dean's comeback.
"You can either choose to go with two seamers and rest one of them, or Linsey Smith may need to make way. She has had a challenging couple of games following a strong series against the West Indies. She seems vulnerable, possibly not adapting her pace to the conditions effectively and lacking the accuracy she previously demonstrated against the West Indies," Knight noted.
Apart from selection concerns, Knight encouraged England to maintain a positive mindset and avoid retreating after two tough matches.
"It's crucial that they don't retreat into their shells and that spirits stay high. Self-pity isn’t an option, and that’s a key message for the team management. They must stay focused, knowing they can still improve and build their confidence back up," Knight stated.
