New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) Off-spinner Charlie Dean has expressed that she wouldn't decline an opportunity to take on the role of captain for the England women’s team if it were offered to her.
The 24-year-old Charlie's candidacy for the England women's captaincy has gained traction following Heather Knight's resignation last week after a disappointing 16-0 defeat in the Women’s Ashes series held in Australia.
"I haven't had significant discussions regarding this. Leadership is a quality I'm developing into - I wouldn’t reject the idea, but I'm unsure if this is the right moment. It's an immense honor to be considered for such a position. However, gaining more experience in these roles is crucial so that if the opportunity arises, I can fully commit to it," Charlie was quoted by BBC Sport on Thursday.
She also believes that Heather’s legacy as captain should not be overshadowed by the unfavorable outcomes towards the end of her leadership. "Heather has fought diligently for our cause and for the advancements we've made in the women's game. Perhaps our previous performances let her down, but that doesn't diminish the contributions she has made to the role, and I hold her in high regard," Charlie added.
"I'm truly pleased that she will continue to be part of the team. Her ability to inspire excellence and connect with her teammates is unparalleled, which is why her name is frequently mentioned," she continued.
In conclusion, Charlie stated that the team will take lessons from the criticisms faced during the Women’s Ashes as they look ahead to upcoming international matches and the ODI World Cup scheduled in India later this year.
"We take pride in ensuring that we approach our game with integrity, although we encountered some challenges out there. We've certainly learned how we present ourselves. I have no doubt that we all give our utmost when on the field, so it's disheartening that we weren't perceived that way. We recognize that there is a spotlight on us, which is a positive aspect. We aspire to improve for our spectators and supporters," she concluded.
