New Delhi, March 11 (NationPress) India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak praised the team's supportive culture and their unwavering belief that Abhishek Sharma would eventually find his form during their triumphant 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup campaign, especially after a challenging start in the competition.

Abhishek, known for his explosive batting style, faced difficulties in the tournament, particularly after battling a stomach infection. He managed to score only one fifty and recorded three ducks before making a remarkable comeback in the title match against New Zealand held in Ahmedabad, where he scored 52 runs off just 21 balls, reaching his fifty in a mere 18 deliveries.

“When it comes to Abhishek, he is incredibly mentally resilient. Even during tough times, he maintained a smile. Although he was unwell at the tournament's start and struggled to score in four league matches, he faced pressure with determination. Against Zimbabwe, I noticed he was trying to hit the ball hard, likely due to his lack of runs,” Kotak mentioned.

“The team made it a point to ensure he remained in a positive mindset. We continuously believed in him, reminding him that he would shine again. He scored a fifty against Zimbabwe in Chennai. While he didn’t score heavily against England, he played a crucial role in the final. The team's faith in him was instrumental,” Kotak shared in an exclusive interview with IANS.

He elaborated on how he and the Indian team management balanced giving technical guidance without overwhelming a player like Abhishek, while also ensuring he stayed in a ‘happy space’.

“We all kept his spirits high, often saying to him, ‘Tu karega (You will come good).’ Minor adjustments were made to his technique and tactics to help him regain his form, such as utilizing the crease effectively. Gautam also provided valuable insights, especially since bowlers were targeting him outside the off-stump,” he explained.

“The technical and tactical adjustments were crucial for his success. Everyone contributed to keeping him confident. In coaching, it’s vital not to overload a batter with information, as it can lead to them feeling overwhelmed. We managed this well, and it ultimately paid off,” he added.

Kotak also commended wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan for making a stellar return to the national team after nearly a two-year absence. Replacing Shubman Gill for the T20Is against New Zealand in January, Kishan amassed 317 runs, becoming India’s second-highest run-scorer in the tournament after Sanju Samson.

“Ishan had an outstanding tournament after his return. Having worked with him for a long time, I’ve seen him excel in domestic matches and during his time with Gujarat Lions in the IPL,” Kotak remarked.

“When I took over as head coach for India A in 2019, Ishan was part of my team for five series. I’ve witnessed his journey, including his struggles after returning from South Africa in 2023. He is an incredibly lively player,” he said.

Kotak noted a marked evolution in Kishan's temperament, emphasizing that the humor both he and Abhishek bring is essential for the team. “I’ve observed a newfound maturity in him compared to the past. His sense of humor brings joy to the team, which is crucial under constant pressure,” he stated.

“Players like him and Abhishek add a fun element, which is vital to maintain morale. I’m delighted for Ishan; his comeback was remarkable, and he truly delivered for the team,” he added.

Kotak also highlighted the strategic adjustments made to the batting order, noting that Tilak Varma transitioned from a top-order batter to a middle-order finisher to maintain momentum. “Tilak’s flexibility has been invaluable. He’s the type of player who adapts to the team’s needs without any tension,” he commented.

Beyond individual performances, Kotak emphasized the collective selflessness of the batting group, citing Suryakumar Yadav's decision to allow Shivam Dube to bat ahead of him during the semi-final against England. “This reflects the essence of a world champion team,” he said.

“Every player exhibited selflessness; Surya put the team’s needs above his own position. Shivam and Hardik also contributed significantly, along with Tilak. The camaraderie in the batting group is commendable,” he explained.

Kotak praised Shivam Dube for his outstanding performance, scoring 235 runs in nine matches at an average of 39.16 and an impressive strike rate of 169.06. Dube's contributions in both the semi-final and final were crucial in helping India post totals exceeding 250.

“Shivam has been exceptional. In the final, he scored 26 runs off just 8 balls and contributed 43 in the semi-final. His development as a player is commendable. Each player has their unique strengths and fulfills their roles according to the team's needs,” he noted.

“They maintain their positivity even when not getting to bat. Dube is remarkable, and all our players embody excellence both on and off the field. We faced challenges throughout the tournament but performed excellently, and we are proud to have won the World Cup in India,” Kotak concluded.
