Kuldeep Yadav on T20 Success: Mindset and Preparation Are Key
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 3 (NationPress) Kuldeep Yadav, the left-arm wrist-spinner for Delhi Capitals (DC), emphasized that adhering to one's strengths and nurturing an attacking mindset are vital for spinners to thrive in high-scoring scenarios. He highlighted that his confidence stems from thorough preparation and a consistent routine.
Since joining DC in the 2022 season, Kuldeep has established himself as one of the IPL's top spinners, achieving 21 wickets in his debut year—the best performance in a single edition.
"When a batsman applies pressure, there’s a common tendency to stray from your strengths and opt for safer alternatives. However, I firmly believe in concentrating on what you're good at.
“I generally evaluate the batsman—how he approaches the game, his strengths, and the requirements of the match situation. I aim to anticipate what the batsman expects from me and stay ahead by predicting his next move and bowling accordingly.
“Ultimately, your strength defines you. If you identify as an attacking spinner, you shouldn't deviate from that. Contributing to the team by taking wickets is unparalleled. The team relies on your wicket-taking ability. While outcomes may vary, maintaining an attacking mindset is crucial,” Kuldeep shared during a pre-match press conference on Friday.
Kuldeep has consistently been the spearhead of DC’s spin bowling alongside Axar Patel, concluding IPL 2025 as the leading wicket-taker for the team with 15 wickets, following a tally of 16 wickets in 2024.
His international performance mirrored this success; he ended the 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup as the top wicket-taker with 17 wickets in seven innings, although it culminated in just one game for him—against Pakistan in Colombo—during India’s triumphant T20 World Cup journey.
"In tournaments like the World Cup, if you aren't playing frequently, preparation becomes essential. Consistency in training ensures you're ready when opportunities arise. My preparation has been thorough.
“I always approached my training as if I were set to play the next match. This helps maintain rhythm, which is paramount. When you're engaged with the game through practice and adhere to a proper routine, performing after a hiatus becomes manageable.
“Remaining with the team, participating in practice sessions, and mentally preparing as if you're about to play is fundamental. Even if you aren’t selected, your mindset must always be ready,” he added.
Kuldeep further stated that his confidence and ability to take wickets are closely linked to the quality of his preparation before a game. "Confidence is derived from preparation. The effectiveness of your training and routine is critical. Good training leads to natural confidence.
“Wicket-taking boils down to how you respond to a batsman's approach. Simultaneously, batsmen also strategize on where they want to score runs or which shots to execute. Regular encounters against a batsman help you grasp their strengths and patterns.
“That planning is consistently in your mind. Facing a new batsman presents a challenge as their playing style is unknown. Confidence is essential, and it originates from preparation—a fact worth remembering,” he elaborated.
Reflecting on his personal life post-marriage to his wife Vanshika shortly after the T20 World Cup victory, Kuldeep humorously remarked that his second innings is progressing well. "I truly enjoyed the wedding. While pressure and patience differ on the cricket field, I’m relishing my second innings in life. Adjusting takes a bit of time, but we’re extremely happy and thankful."
Regarding the expectations on spinners to restrict runs in high-scoring matches, Kuldeep stated, "You can’t approach a game believing it will undoubtedly be high-scoring. Young players often think T20 cricket revolves solely around big scores, but preparation and strategy carry greater weight.
“It’s not always the case that you will concede 40–45 runs in your four overs. Sometimes, you may take wickets instead. Occasionally, one batsman may dominate you—that’s part of the game. In T20 cricket, it’s typically one batsman who poses a challenge, not the entire batting order.
“You need to be equipped for that challenge while remaining true to your strengths. Yes, batting can be easier on smaller grounds, but your focus should be on aiding the team. An attacking mindset is crucial. Effectively managing pressure is what propels players forward,” he concluded.
Kuldeep remarked on the success of bowlers on T20-friendly pitches, saying, "That’s where Test cricket plays a role. In T20s, the effectiveness of your bowling is key. In the last match, LSG executed their bowling excellently—they maintained the right lengths, effectively utilized their pace, and there was some spin as well. It was a favorable wicket overall, even for batsmen.
“Different venues present varying conditions. In Delhi, you might encounter a flat track. In Lucknow or Chennai, bowlers may find advantageous conditions. In Bangalore, it tends to be more batting-friendly. This exemplifies the home and away advantage, and that should be the case.
“Overthinking conditions isn’t beneficial. If everything aligns perfectly in cricket, you won’t evolve as a player. Adapting to different conditions, especially away from home, challenges you. Once you acclimatize, the game becomes smoother. That’s an integral part of cricket, and it should remain equitable for all,” he concluded.
