New Delhi, May 10 (NationPress) Olympian Kynan Chenai stood out as the leading Indian competitor while India’s trap shooting team struggled to reach the finals in both the men’s and women’s individual events on the second-to-last day of the third International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Shotgun stage in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Kynan recorded scores of 24, 24, 22, 24, and 23, culminating in a total of 117 in the men’s trap qualifiers, securing the 17th position in the final standings.

Manuel Murcia from Spain and Lada Denisova of the Neutral Athletes (AIN) clinched gold medals in the men’s and women’s events, respectively. The Trap Mixed Team event will take place on the concluding day, Sunday, as reported by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) in a statement released on Saturday.

The scores and rankings of the other Indian participants were:

Trap Men: Shardul Vihan 113 (24, 21, 19, 24, 25) -- 62nd; Bhowneesh Mendiratta 113 (23, 22, 23, 23, 22) -- 65th.

Trap Women: Kirti Gupta 114 (22, 22, 22, 25, 23) -- 15th; Rajeshwari Kumari 114 (23, 22, 23, 23, 23) -- 17th; Sabeera Haris 112 (22, 21, 23, 24, 22) -- 27th.

Earlier this week, Abhay Singh Sekhon, the youngest member of the Indian men’s skeet shooting team at the ISSF World Cup in Nicosia, ignited hopes of advancing to the finals, ending the second day of qualifications in fifth place with a score of 98 after four rounds.

This young talent from Punjab trailed just one behind the pace set by former world champion and Olympic silver medalist Jesper Hansen from Denmark and former junior world champion Elia Sdruccioli from Italy, both leading the 91-strong field with 99 hits each.

Abhay, with scores of 25, 24, 24, and 25, missed only one target over the two rounds on Monday and matched this performance on Tuesday, concluding with a perfect round instead of starting with one. He shares the same tally with six other strong competitors, promising a thrilling contest for the top six finalists on day three, likely coming down to the final shot and several shoot-offs before the last.
