Berlin, Feb 10 (NationPress) First-half goals from Benjamin Sesko and Xavi Simons propelled RB Leipzig to a 2-0 victory against St. Pauli in the Bundesliga.
Leipzig dominated the game from the outset, yet it was St. Pauli who appeared more dangerous in the opening moments, with Jackson Irvine forcing goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi into action just three minutes in.
Gulacsi was kept busy, notably tipping Castello Lukeba's mishit clearance onto the crossbar to avert an own goal in the 16th minute, according to reports from Xinhua.
However, the home team broke the stalemate shortly after when Xavi assisted Sesko, who outmaneuvered David Nemeth in the penalty area before scoring into the bottom-right corner.
Leipzig increased the pressure and extended their lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute when Sesko's brilliant setup allowed Xavi to find the net from 11 meters.
St. Pauli nearly reduced the deficit just before halftime when Noah Weisshaupt hit the crossbar.
After the break, Leipzig's Willi Orban compromised his team's position by receiving a red card for a professional foul on Elias Saad in the 69th minute. The resulting free kick from Eric Smith came agonizingly close, but that was the last significant opportunity until late in the match.
Gulacsi proved his worth once more in the dying moments, saving long-range shots from Johannes Eggestein and Hauke Wahl during stoppage time to clinch a 2-0 win at home.
This victory enables Leipzig to regain momentum and solidify their position in fourth place, while St. Pauli descends to 14th.
St. Pauli coach Alexander Blessin expressed his frustration, stating, "We took the lead but then conceded, it's disheartening. We were performing well until that point, but after Leipzig's first goal, we lost our rhythm. In the second half, we pushed hard, created some opportunities, but it simply wasn't sufficient. Leipzig's quality was evident today, but we will secure points in other matches."
Leipzig coach Marco Rose commented, "We controlled the first half, remained patient, and displayed great determination to establish a 2-0 lead before halftime. Overall, it was a strong performance and a well-earned victory for us."
In other Bundesliga action on Sunday, Holstein Kiel played to a 2-2 draw against Bochum in a crucial relegation battle.
