Langer Optimistic About LSG's Potential for IPL 2026

Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 24 (NationPress) With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on the horizon, the Lucknow Super Giants are focusing on a revitalized roster, enhanced support team, and a more stable leadership structure to turn their fortunes around. Head coach Justin Langer voiced confidence in the team's preparations, underscoring a robust auction strategy and improved squad balance.
Despite being one of the franchises still chasing their first IPL title, LSG faced a challenging 2025 season, landing sixth with just six victories against eight losses. Eager to rectify their weaknesses, especially in bowling, the franchise made significant signings, welcoming Mohammed Shami, Anrich Nortje, and Wanindu Hasaranga.
“The build-up has been exceptional. I believe we executed an excellent auction, which is critical,” Langer shared with JioStar, reflecting on the team's pre-season evolution. “Last year, we had a solid foundation. Our batting was among the best in the league. While we didn’t fully capitalize on that, this year we’ve strengthened our roster. Tough selection decisions lie ahead. If our batting continues to perform and our bowling progresses, we have a very strong team.”
Langer also highlighted Shami’s impact on the team, particularly on young fast bowler Mayank Yadav. “During a team lunch, Mohammed Shami captivated everyone’s attention. The players were completely focused on him. His experience is invaluable. We often talk about the big brother-little brother or mentor-apprentice relationship in coaching, and that’s precisely what we have here,” he noted.
At the forefront, Rishabh Pant, the most expensive Indian player in IPL history after being acquired for Rs. 27 crore, seems to be embracing his leadership role. Langer believes Pant’s innate personality will be crucial for his success as a captain.
“When we see Rishabh happy, laughing, and enjoying himself, he’ll be an outstanding captain, and that’s a lesson we learned last year. He joined a new franchise, eager to make an impression, which is understandable. But he’s already displaying a more relaxed demeanor. He knows his teammates now, and we are supportive of him. He’s smiling and even dancing. When he’s in that state and playing cricket, he’s one of the most thrilling players to watch globally. I’m excited to collaborate with him again. He brings incredible energy and warmth, which makes him formidable,” Langer expressed.
Furthermore, the franchise has fortified its support staff, with Kane Williamson coming on board as a strategic advisor alongside seasoned professionals like Tom Moody and Bharat Arun. Langer emphasized that these changes reflect an overall enhancement in preparation.
“In the past, many bowlers have arrived post-surgery or injury, trying to regain form during the season. However, this pre-season, we’ve established a top-notch medical team under Patrick Farhart. Tom Moody, our new Director of Cricket, meticulously constructed this squad at the auction with exceptional professionalism. Bharat Arun is more than just a bowling coach; he’s a mentor and a guiding force,” he elaborated.
With a more well-rounded squad, experienced leadership, and renewed enthusiasm, LSG is determined to finally overcome their underachiever status and launch a serious challenge for the IPL 2026 title.
