New Delhi, July 1 (NationPress) Veteran Australian spinner Nathan Lyon, at 37 years of age, has no immediate plans for retirement. His goal is to clinch away series victories in England and India, alongside obtaining another World Test Championship title before he hangs up his boots.
Lyon was instrumental in Australia’s inaugural triumph at the World Test Championship Final against India in 2023 and featured in the squad that lost to South Africa at Lord's last month.
After leading the victory song for over 12 years, Lyon has passed the baton to Alex Carey following Australia’s impressive 159-run victory in the series opener against the West Indies in Barbados. He remains optimistic about contributing more as a player.
"I've consistently stated my desire to win overseas in India and England. We have the chance to achieve this in a couple of years, but we must also focus on each Test and ensure we’re performing well here in the West Indies," Lyon expressed.
"Following that, we face a significant summer at home with the Ashes. However, another World Test Championship final is definitely on my agenda," Lyon told cricket.com.au.
Currently, Lyon boasts a total of 556 Test wickets, ranking third among Australian bowlers, behind legendary spinner Shane Warne (708) and former fast bowler Glenn McGrath (563).
With two Tests left against the West Indies this month and a series against England later this year, Lyon is in a prime position to surpass McGrath and close in on Warne's remarkable record in the near future.
“Warney is a long way off and, in my opinion, he is the greatest to have ever played the game. I consider myself fortunate to be a part of such a remarkable cricket team. We're on the path to greatness, but we're not there yet. Being part of this bowling attack and fulfilling my role is truly special, which is why I continue to play,” he stated.
