Pune, April 5 (NationPress) Following her remarkable performance at the WTA Mumbai Open, 15-year-old Maaya Rajeshwaran has been selected as a reserve player for the Indian team participating in the Billie Jean King Cup 2025 Asia-Oceania Group-1. This esteemed tournament, organized by the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) in collaboration with the All India Tennis Association (AITA) and the Pune Metropolitan District Tennis Association (PMDTA), is set to take place at the Mhalunge Balewadi tennis complex from April 8 to April 12.
In a statement made prior to the tournament, Maaya articulated her aspirations for the year, saying, “My primary aim for this year is to compete in the junior grand slams while also participating in the women’s category. I hope to secure a junior slam in the coming years, which is my mid-term objective.”
The young tennis player also reflected on her recent success at the Mumbai Open, which brought her into the national limelight. “Receiving a wildcard entry for the Mumbai Open was truly remarkable. Interestingly, it was not part of my original plan. I am grateful to MSLTA and Sunder Iyer sir for providing me this opportunity,” she mentioned.
“Once I received the wildcard, I recognized the significance of the opportunity. Even after winning my first match, I felt content with my performance; however, I wasn’t fully satisfied because my ultimate goal was qualification,” Maaya elaborated.
Competing in the tournament as a wildcard, Maaya faced off against some of the world’s top players. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “I’m thrilled with my performance. At this point in my career, I am transitioning from junior to women’s tennis, and this tournament was a significant breakthrough for me. I am truly grateful for that.”
Expressing her enthusiasm for the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup in Pune, Maaya remarked, “I am extremely excited that this event is being held in our country. It’s my debut on the Indian team. For every athlete, the first goal is to represent their country. I've been part of numerous junior teams, but being part of the women’s team is my actual aspiration. I’m grateful to be selected and hope we perform well. I encourage everyone to come out and support us, as it makes a tremendous difference,” she concluded.
