New Delhi, Feb 26 (NationPress) The Maharashtra government has received commendations from para-athletes for its proactive measures aimed at fostering inclusivity in the realm of sports. Para shuttler Sukant Kadam shared his appreciation for the government's initiatives that ensure equal opportunities and support for para-athletes, enabling them to pursue their ambitions without hindrance.
Kadam stands out as a leading para-shuttler in the nation, having secured four bronze medals at the World Championships (2019, 2022, 2024) and three bronze medals at the Asian Para Games (2018, 2022). His aspirations for a medal during his Paralympic debut faced a hurdle as he was defeated 0-2 by Indonesia's Fredy Setiawan in the Men's Singles SL4 bronze medal match.
"I am elated to witness the Maharashtra government's proactive stance towards inclusivity in sports. By granting equal opportunities and support to para-athletes, they empower us to pursue our dreams without any restrictions. This initiative is revolutionary, and I am thankful to the Maharashtra government for their steadfast dedication to advancing para-sports,” he stated.
World Champion Sachin Sarjerao Khilari, who captured the silver medal in the men’s shot put F46 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, also praised this 'transformative' initiative.
The 34-year-old Indian para athlete made his mark with a Paralympic medal, achieving an Asian record of 16.32 meters on his second attempt.
"The Maharashtra government has extended equal opportunities to both para-athletes and able-bodied athletes, whether through financial rewards or various schemes. This equal treatment has fortified para-athletes," he expressed.
"We seek no sympathy; we demand equal opportunities. The Maharashtra government is fulfilling that need. My heartfelt gratitude goes to the Paralympic Committee of Maharashtra and the Maharashtra Sarkar," expressed Sachin.
India’s Paralympic contingent, which included 18 Khelo India athletes, achieved a remarkable 29 medals, marking the highest tally for the nation at the Paris Paralympics 2024.
"I wish to extend my thanks to CM Devendra Fadnavis for this initiative. We are moving in the right direction. Vikasit Bharat embodies an inclusive Bharat, and this is a significant step forward. It will inspire more athletes from Maharashtra to pursue para sports and provide the necessary support we, as athletes, require," stated former world number one in the SL3 badminton category, Mansi Joshi.
"This will motivate more athletes to earn medals and enhance performance.
