Manchester, July 14 (NationPress) Manchester United has announced the appointment of Darren Fletcher as the new lead coach for the Under-18s team. Fletcher made his return to United in 2021 after a remarkable 20-year tenure as a player, during which he made over 340 appearances.
Having graduated from the Academy, Fletcher celebrated numerous achievements, including five Premier League titles, two League Cups, the FA Cup, the Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup with Manchester United.
He has commenced his role immediately, overseeing the team's pre-season activities, which kicked off with a training camp at the Adidas global headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany, alongside a friendly match against Queens Park Rangers at Carrington.
“This new role excites me tremendously, and I am eager to take on greater responsibility in nurturing our young talents,” Fletcher expressed in a Monday statement.
“I look forward to collaborating with such a gifted age group, helping them realize their potential and preparing them for successful careers at the highest level,” he added.
Director of football, Jason Wilcox, remarked, “We are thrilled that Darren will lead our Under-18s. He fully understands what it takes to be a successful Academy graduate and has significantly contributed to shaping the pathways for many of our young players recently.
“Darren’s strong relationships with all staff members will further strengthen the bond between the Academy and the first team, enhancing our capacity to produce world-class players ready to shine at Manchester United,” he concluded.
Fletcher will also feature in an upcoming Lifeblood short, honoring a special ceremony at Old Trafford where the newest group of scholars will receive the traditional club suit. He passionately shared at the event his experiences as a player and the honor of representing United at the Academy level.
