New Delhi, May 1 (NationPress) The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, on Thursday, awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award to the renowned Indian badminton men's doubles team, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.
The pair was honored with this esteemed recognition last year but missed the National Sports Awards ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan due to their participation in the Malaysia Open Super 1000.
"Today in New Delhi, I had the pleasure of celebrating our badminton heroes, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, by presenting them with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award 2023. This acknowledgment reflects their hard work and remarkable achievements on the court. I wish them all the best for their future challenges," Mandaviya shared on Xx.
Initially, the former world No. 1 pair was set to receive the award in February; however, it was postponed following the passing of Satwik's father due to cardiac arrest.
Chirag and Satwik had an impressive year in 2023, clinching the Asian Games gold medal (the first ever for India in badminton at this event), winning the Asian Championships, and securing the prestigious Indonesia Open Super 1000. They also earned bronze medals at the World Championships and gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
In a remarkable feat, Satwik shattered a decade-old Guinness World Record for the fastest badminton shot, achieving a phenomenal 565 km/h smash, surpassing the previous record of 493 km/h set by Malaysian player Tan Boon Heong in May 2013.
After their quarterfinal finish at the Paris Olympics, Chirag and Satwik began the 2025 season strongly by reaching the semifinals of both the Malaysia Open and Indian Open.
However, they are currently facing fitness and injury challenges, having withdrawn from the Badminton Asia Championships last month and subsequently from the Sudirman Cup due to illness.
The duo last competed at the 2025 All England Open Super 1000, where they had to retire midway through their Round of 16 match.
