Hong Kong, Sep 13 (NationPress) India’s leading men’s doubles team, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, have made an impressive comeback in what has been a challenging year, securing their place in the final of the Hong Kong Open Super 500 with a convincing straight-game win on Saturday.
The World No. 9 pair triumphed over the unseeded duo from Chinese Taipei, Bing-Wei Lin and Chen Cheng Kuan, clinching victory with scores of 21-17 and 21-15, thus breaking a streak of six consecutive semifinal defeats in 2025.
Seeded eighth in the tournament, Satwik and Chirag are set to face China’s World No. 3 duo, Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, who overcame Taipei's Fang-Chih Lee and Fang-Jen Lee with a score of 21-19, 21-8.
This final marks their first since clinching the gold medal at the Asian Games in October 2023 and serves as a significant morale booster following a year filled with injuries and personal challenges. The pair, recognized as trailblazers in Indian men’s doubles, have been working hard to regain their form after a tough 12-month period.
At 24, Satwik faced a substantial part of the season sidelined due to a recurring back injury and a painful elbow issue. His struggles were further intensified by personal loss, as he experienced the passing of his father due to cardiac arrest in February 2025. Just as he resumed training, he was hit by a bout of chickenpox. Chirag, aged 28, has been battling a lingering lower back injury, which forced them to withdraw from numerous events and affected their on-court chemistry.
Despite these hurdles, the duo has showcased flashes of their potential, including a bronze medal finish at the BWF World Championships, making them the third Indian pairing after Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu to secure multiple medals at this prestigious competition.
Later today, Lakshya Sen will compete against the third-seeded Chou Tien-chen from Taiwan in the men’s singles semifinal.
