Changzhou, July 26 (IANNS) The Indian men's doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty faced an exit from the China Open 2025, succumbing to Malaysia's world No. 2 pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the semifinals on Saturday with a straight-game loss.
The duo, currently ranked world No. 3, recorded scores of 13-21, 17-21 during the 42-minute match. This marked their third semifinal showing in the BWF Tour season, having previously reached the same stage at the Singapore Open and India Open. The Malaysian team will now compete against Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri in the final.
Satwik and Chirag advanced to the semifinals following a dominant victory over Malaysia’s Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi in the quarterfinals on Friday, winning decisively 21-18, 21-14 in just 40 minutes. Their performance showcased their renowned aggressive tactics and seamless teamwork, enhancing their head-to-head record against Sin and Yi to 7-3. In that match, the Indian pair took control early, maintaining composure in the first game before executing a six-point streak from 15-14 in the second game to clinch the win.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Unnati Hooda saw her remarkable journey conclude against Japan’s world No. 4 Akane Yamaguchi in the women's singles quarterfinals. Unnati, who had previously defeated two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu in the pre-quarterfinals, fell short with scores of 16-21, 12-21 in a 33-minute match. Despite her commendable effort, she found it challenging to keep pace with Yamaguchi’s relentless speed and accuracy.
After a closely contested first game, the Japanese athlete surged ahead in the second, leveraging her experience to quell the young Indian's aspirations.
With consistent semifinal appearances, Satwik-Chirag reinforce their status as one of the premier doubles teams globally, while Unnati’s bold campaign signifies the emergence of a promising talent in Indian badminton.
