Did Mandhana Just Become the Second Indian Batter to Cross 10,000 International Runs?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 28 (NationPress) India’s vice-captain Smriti Mandhana achieved a remarkable feat on Sunday by becoming the second Indian woman cricketer, after her fellow countrywoman Mithali Raj, to surpass 10,000 runs in international cricket.
Making her debut against Bangladesh in April 2013, Smriti required just 27 runs before the fourth T20I against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram to hit this significant milestone, which she accomplished in only 20 balls at the Greenfield International Stadium. She concluded her innings with an impressive score of 80 runs off 48 balls, marking her 32nd fifty, which included 11 fours and three sixes at a striking rate of 170.2.
Alongside Mithali, Smriti now stands with Suzie Bates from New Zealand and former England player-turned-coach Charlotte Edwards as the only women to achieve this impressive milestone.
In addition to her T20I success, Smriti has accumulated 629 runs across seven Tests and 5,322 runs in 117 ODIs. Mithali, the all-time leading run-scorer in women’s international cricket, retired with 10,868 runs, and Smriti has the chance to eclipse that total.
Earlier, during the first T20I against Sri Lanka at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam, Smriti became the first Indian batter and the second overall after Suzie Bates to reach 4,000 runs in Women’s T20Is.
The left-handed opener was pivotal in India’s successful Women’s ODI World Cup campaign, scoring 434 runs in nine innings with an average of 54.25.
In 2025, Smriti concluded as the top run-scorer in ODIs, amassing 1,362 runs in 23 innings, featuring five fifties and five centuries. She also made history as the first Indian woman to achieve a century in every format of the game.
As the five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka wraps up on December 30, Smriti is set to lead the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 2026 Women’s Premier League (WPL), starting January 9, where RCB will face Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians in the opening match at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
