New Delhi, April 25 (NationPress) Defender Mehtab Singh of Mumbai City FC praised his team's comprehensive performance after they defeated Chennaiyin FC 4-0, securing a place in the Kalinga Super Cup 2025 quarterfinals. They will face I-League 2024-25 runners-up Inter Kashi.
This season, the Mumbai City defense has been robust, conceding only 28 goals and maintaining the second-most clean sheets in the league. However, they struggled offensively, netting just 29 goals, which led to a sixth-place finish in the standings.
In an interview with IANS, the central defender emphasized the significance of a solid defense in knockout tournaments and commended his team's victory over Chennaiyin.
“A strong defense greatly benefits the team. In the ISL, we achieved the second-most clean sheets, indicating our defensive strength. Unfortunately, we struggled to convert chances, but in our last match, we scored effectively and defended well. We aim to replicate this all-around performance in the upcoming match,” Mehtab told IANS.
Mumbai began the 2024-25 season as the defending champions, but their inconsistent performances have left them with one last chance to secure silverware. Mehtab mentioned that the prospect of winning a trophy and qualifying for the ACL 2 Playoffs through the Super Cup serves as significant motivation for the team.
“Absolutely (on whether winning a trophy boosts the squad's motivation). Comparatively, last year was successful as we fought for the shield and clinched the finals. This season hasn’t gone as planned, and we want to finish strong, returning with positive energy and a trophy. The winner also secures a spot in the ACL2 Playoffs, which is an added incentive,” he added.
