New Delhi, Jan 15 (NationPress) Australian cricketer Nathan McSweeney expressed his excitement upon witnessing Sam Konstas take significant risks and successfully execute them during his remarkable Test debut in the Boxing Day match against India. The two players developed a strong camaraderie during the ‘A’ team series leading up to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
McSweeney began the batting in the first three Tests against India; however, he recorded an average of only 14.4. As a result, he was sidelined for the last two Tests, making way for Konstas, who scored an impressive 60 runs off 65 balls on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
“It’s an interesting situation; I played several Australia A matches alongside Sammy, and we connected very well. When I had my chance, he sent me a message, and naturally, when he got his opportunity, I reached out. Being a cricket enthusiast, it was thrilling to observe,” McSweeney remarked.
“The atmosphere at the MCG appeared to be quite electric, and for your first Test, taking the risks he did and executing them flawlessly was quite impressive. As we noticed, it put the opposition under pressure, prompting them to bowl deliveries we hadn’t seen in the series. So, kudos to him for taking that initiative and giving the team a strong start,” he added in an interview with SEN Radio.
While McSweeney acknowledged that he was not pleased about losing his position in Australia’s Test lineup, he accepted the decision with grace and is eager to reclaim his spot. “The last two Tests, we won. It’s never a pleasant experience to be dropped, and initially, you’re not happy about it; watching can be tough. But as time passes, you can reflect and view it as it is,” he stated.
Both McSweeney and Konstas are now set to travel to Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series commencing in Galle on January 29.
