IPL 2026: Hussey Comments on Mhatre's Hamstring Injury Situation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, April 19 (NationPress) Mike Hussey, the batting coach for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), shared an update regarding Ayush Mhatre, a key top-order batter who suffered a hamstring tear during his innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). While he is uncertain about the specific severity of the injury, he noted that it indeed appears concerning.
Mhatre entered the game as an impact substitute for Gurjapneet Singh in the second over of CSK's pursuit of 195 runs, following the early dismissal of opener Sanju Samson. The 18-year-old showed promise, striking an impressive 30 runs off just 12 deliveries.
The injury occurred when Mhatre attempted to return for a second run after playing the second ball of the fifth over. He managed to complete the run but collapsed in pain afterward, prompting the physio to rush onto the field. Despite the discomfort, he chose to continue batting but was dismissed shortly thereafter.
"It's a hamstring tear. I can't specify the extent yet. We'll likely get him scanned tomorrow. Unfortunately, it looks quite serious. His absence will be a significant blow as he has been performing well for us," Hussey remarked during the post-match press conference.
"Mhatre is an exciting young prospect, and while we are disappointed to lose him, it opens the door for another player to step up. We have several talented individuals who have yet to get their chance, so it's an opportunity for them. Although we regret Ayush's potential absence, it’s an exciting moment for a new player to emerge," he added.
Mhatre joins the growing injury list for CSK, which already includes bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis, both ruled out due to injuries. Additionally, former captain MS Dhoni is yet to make his season debut as he recovers from a calf injury sustained during a practice session before the tournament.
CSK faced a narrow 10-run defeat against SRH, placing them seventh in the points table with four points from six matches. Their next challenge is against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Thursday.
