Mumbai, May 20 (NationPress) The Mumbai Indians (MI) have acquired Jonny Bairstow, Richard Gleeson, and Charith Asalanka to fill in for Will Jacks, Ryan Rickelton, and Corbin Bosch, who are departing for international duties following MI's final league match on May 26.

The newly signed players will be eligible to participate from the playoffs onward, contingent on MI's advancement to the knockout rounds, per the IPL announcement.

Jacks, who returned to India last week ahead of MI's concluding group-stage fixtures, will miss the final stages of the tournament due to his selection in England's limited-overs squad for the upcoming series against the West Indies, which coincides with the revised playoff schedule.

This English allrounder, who has played in 11 of MI's initial 12 matches, has scored 195 runs over nine innings and taken five wickets with his off-spin bowling. He will be succeeded by fellow England player and wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow, who joins MI for Rs 5.25 crore.

Bairstow went unsold in the mega-auction last November and has not represented England in any format since June 2024. He is arriving in India after leading Yorkshire against Surrey in the County Championship. Bairstow has a total of 50 IPL appearances over five seasons, having previously played for Sunrisers Hyderabad (2019-21) and Punjab Kings (2022 and 2024).

With Rickelton also leaving before the playoffs for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia, Bairstow will provide MI with an additional wicketkeeping option. Rickelton is MI's second-highest run-scorer this season, accumulating 336 runs at an average of 30.54 and a strike rate of 153.42 in his 12 innings.

English pacer Gleeson, who made his IPL debut last year with two matches for Chennai Super Kings as a replacement player, will take Rickelton's spot at a reserve price of Rs 1 crore.

Additionally, Charith Asalanka will step in at a reserve price of Rs 75 lakh for Corbin Bosch, who is also included in South Africa's squad for the WTC final at Lord's.

Point of View

The Mumbai Indians' strategic replacements reflect a proactive approach to team management. By bringing in experienced players like Bairstow and Gleeson, MI is not only ensuring depth in their squad but also maintaining competitive viability in the playoffs. This decision aligns with the ethos of excellence that MI embodies.
