Johannesburg, Oct 23 (NationPress) - South Africa faces a significant setback ahead of their white-ball series against Pakistan, as T20I captain David Miller and fast bowler Gerald Coetzee have been ruled out due to various injuries, according to a statement from Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Thursday.
Miller, who was anticipated to lead the Proteas in the three-match T20I series against Pakistan from October 28 to November 1, has suffered a grade 1 right hamstring strain during training prior to the tour. CSA stated, “He will now begin a phased rehabilitation program.”
On the other hand, Coetzee has been excluded from both the T20I and subsequent ODI portions of the tour, set to take place from November 4 to 8, after incurring a pectoralis muscle injury while bowling in a one-off T20I against Namibia in Windhoek earlier this month.
“Follow-up scans have determined the extent of the injury and, after consulting with specialists, he has initiated a structured rehabilitation program under the care of the Cricket South Africa High Performance and Momentum Multiply Titans medical teams,” added CSA.
In light of these injuries, batters Matthew Breetzke and uncapped Tony de Zorzi have been added to the T20I squad, with Donovan Ferreira taking over the captaincy for the series in Miller's absence. Fast bowler Ottneil Baartman has been appointed as Coetzee’s replacement in the ODI squad.
The white-ball tour to Pakistan follows a recent Test series that ended in a 1-1 draw, presenting a crucial opportunity for South Africa to evaluate its bench strength and optimize combinations ahead of a demanding international schedule. The T20I squad is set to depart for Islamabad from OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday.
