New Delhi, Sep 27 (NationPress) As India prepares for an electrifying Asia Cup final against Pakistan, former leg-spinner Amit Mishra has showered accolades on young opener Abhishek Sharma for his exceptional performance throughout the tournament. He noted that the remarkable progress that Abhishek has shown in each match stands out significantly.
With a total of 309 runs across six matches at an impressive average of 51.5 and a strike rate of 204.63, Abhishek is currently the top scorer in the Asia Cup. He has contributed with fifties in all three of India’s Super Four victories in the eight-nation tournament.
“His form is indeed commendable. The most impressive aspect is his consistent improvement in every game. In the recent match against Pakistan, he scored 74 runs. In T20s, I believe any established batter should aim to bat for an extended period to secure the win for the team,” Mishra remarked.
“When a new batter enters a T20 match, and a couple of wickets fall, it creates immense pressure. Hence, I hope to see Abhishek continue to evolve and strive to play for as long as possible. What impresses me is that he has developed the ability to play traditional cricket shots rather than attempting risky big hits,” he added.
Mishra expressed satisfaction in observing that Abhishek plays according to his strengths, showcasing his talent and leading his team to greater heights. Alongside Abhishek, Kuldeep Yadav, the left-arm wrist-spinner, has been instrumental in India’s bowling success, taking 13 wickets in six matches, making him the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with an economy rate of 6.04.
“I was pleased to see his performances, though there were moments when he seemed to lose his way. He began bowling faster, but I believe that speed should be used strategically as a variation. A wrist spinner should possess a wicket-taking mindset, and it’s crucial to maintain that attitude,” said Mishra.
“Minor adjustments in fielding and bowling are essential to align with the evolving standards of T20 cricket. However, any changes should be consistent with one’s natural bowling style rather than influenced by external opinions. The fact that he is consistently taking wickets is of utmost importance,” he emphasized.
Mishra also acknowledged the collaborative spirit among spin bowlers Kuldeep, Axar Patel, and Varun Chakaravarthy, stating, “Just as there are partnerships in batting, bowling partnerships are equally vital. Not every bowler will claim multiple wickets; some create pressure, allowing others to capitalize.”
“The synergy among the spin trio is commendable. Even if one bowler concedes runs, others maintain pressure, significantly increasing the chances of taking wickets,” he noted.
With Indian cricket witnessing success through its young talents following their triumph in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, Mishra believes that an Asia Cup victory in Dubai would instill confidence ahead of upcoming series against formidable teams like Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, especially in view of their title defense at home next year.
“Confidence is crucial. The absence of senior players in this squad is a positive sign, as young talents like Abhishek contribute significantly. Winning here will bolster their confidence for larger tournaments,” Mishra concluded.
