Kolkata, March 8 (NationPress) Mohun Bagan Super Giant triumphed over FC Goa with a score of 2-0 in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, maintaining their unbeaten streak at home after a stellar performance on Saturday night.

The match was thrilling, with both squads generating numerous scoring opportunities. Nevertheless, the Mariners clinched their 17th victory of the season, thanks to an own goal by Boris Singh and a late goal from Greg Stewart.

This win ensured they remained unbeaten at home throughout the league phase this season, amassing an impressive total of 56 points, marking the highest tally in a single ISL campaign.

The Mohun Bagan Super Giant started the match energetically, making significant advances into FC Goa's defensive territory early on. Both Greg Stewart and Dimitrios Petratos had chances to score in the opening 10 minutes.

However, FC Goa nearly caught their opponents off-guard during a swift counterattack when Rowllin Borges delivered a precise long ball to Borja Herrera. The Spaniard found Iker Guarrotxena and attempted to get the ball behind the defense, but his shot was off target.

A few moments later, Udanta Singh made an impressive run down the left but Tom Aldred was there to avert the threat.

While the home team started strongly, FC Goa gradually found their rhythm, creating more significant chances. Guarrotxena kept the Mohun Bagan Super Giant defenders alert with his agile movement and came close to scoring multiple times, yet Aldred and the defense held firm.

In the 31st minute, Borja attempted a long-range shot, but Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem punched it away. The same happened in the 37th minute from a free kick, where Dheeraj again thwarted Borja's attempt, allowing the defense to clear the ball.

At the beginning of the second half, Udanta Singh executed an incredible move down the left flank but was recklessly fouled by Asish Rai, who received a yellow card for the infringement. Subsequently, Jose Molina substituted him with Dippendu Biswas in the 57th minute.

The MBSG finally broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute due to miscommunication between Boris Singh and Hrithik Tiwari. Boris's header inadvertently found its way into the net, leaving Hrithik wrong-footed.

Following the goal, the home side became increasingly dominant, with Liston Colaco and Stewart coming close to scoring in rapid succession. Later, Jason Cummings and Dejan Drazic were introduced by their respective coaches after the drinks break.

As the match neared its conclusion, MBSG played conservatively, having already secured the lead. They doubled their advantage when Cummings set up Stewart for a goal, which he calmly slotted past Hrithik to finalize the match as MBSG celebrated lifting the ISL League Shield in front of a crowd of 61,591 fans.

Both teams are set to compete in the ISL semifinals after finishing in the top two positions.
