New Delhi, April 4 (NationPress) Delhi Capitals fast bowler Mukesh Kumar expressed that fellow teammate T Natarajan's confidence is significantly increasing this season, and he anticipates T Natarajan will excel in his responsibilities as a death bowler during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.

At the Arun Jaitley Stadium, T Natarajan recorded figures of 1-24 in three overs, continuing his impressive performance after taking three wickets against the Lucknow Super Giants. Along with Mukesh and Lungi, they effectively utilized their lengths and variations, ultimately thwarting MI's ambitions of establishing a strong target, with only 38 runs being scored off the last four overs.

“Our bonding is excellent. T Natarajan is a specialist death bowler, recognized for his skills in that role. He follows instructions diligently, and he has put in the necessary work. Last year, he faced challenges due to a shoulder injury, which limited his appearances,” Mukesh explained.

“He only managed to play one or two matches, so his impact was minimal. This season is a fresh start. He has been performing admirably from the outset, which should bolster his confidence and position him to perform exceptionally,” Mukesh stated in response to an inquiry from IANS during the post-match press conference.

Discussing the pitch conditions, Mukesh noted, “We played on the same wicket last year, where scoring was easier. However, this time, it played differently; we requested a flat surface, but that was not the case. Our strategy was to bowl first if we won the toss and limit them to a lower score. That plan worked well as we restricted them to around 160 before claiming victory.”

Mukesh shared his aggressive mindset, especially after dismissing Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma in rapid succession, eventually finishing with 2-26. “I always aim to take wickets. If I focus solely on preventing runs, I tend to bowl defensively. I prefer to maintain an attacking approach. If I take wickets, it’s fantastic. If not, it can become challenging to control the runs.”

He attributed his clarity of role and guidance from captain Axar Patel as significant factors leading up to the season. “Prior to the main season, we participated in practice matches. Strong performances in these games encourage the management and team to support you. I had excellent practice matches and engaged in regular discussions with Axar bhai during the off-season.

“He provided insights on areas for improvement, emphasizing their importance for the season. That support from him and the team is now evident in my performances,” he added.

Reflecting on his recovery from a hamstring injury that impacted his domestic season, Mukesh remarked, “Post-injury, my priority was to regain fitness swiftly and maintain mental resilience. I dedicated myself to both aspects. Once I was fit, I prepared thoroughly, performed well, and earned my chance to return… if practice starts at 5 pm, I might arrive at 3 or 4 pm, depending on the situation.”

Regarding the collective support within the DC team for all players, Mukesh emphasized its importance throughout the season. “This isn’t just about one or two matches; it’s a 14-match tournament. If the team doesn’t support you, it can be challenging. Here, everyone encourages each other and helps us adhere to our strategies. That support is crucial.”

Mukesh added that his preparation has become more intentional. “There’s nothing drastically different. I’m simply being more deliberate and giving my best in practice. From the outset, I aimed to bowl in the powerplay and death overs, so I’ve been concentrating on that.

“Performing well in the powerplay and taking a few wickets applies pressure to the batting side… In the death overs, poor execution can lead to a difference of 10–20 runs, which could be pivotal in a chase. Therefore, both phases hold equal significance.”

He also discussed the importance of hitting test-match lengths for success as a power-play bowler. “Last year, we observed how Hazlewood bowled; he consistently hit those test lengths. Our coach advised me to focus on my strengths and target that area, as it’s challenging for batsmen to score from, especially if the ball is moving.”

On the topic of fielding, Mukesh noted that the hiring of John Mooney has resulted in positive changes. “There have been many improvements with the new fielding coach. Batting and bowling can fluctuate, but fielding is an area where you must give 100% every time. Even saving a couple of runs or taking a crucial catch can significantly impact the match outcome.”
