New Delhi, Feb 11 (NationPress) India’s Mukund Sasikumar staged an exhilarating comeback to move into the round of 16 at the Delhi Open, triumphing over France’s Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg with scores of 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 in his opening match.

With the singles main draw now underway at the DLTA Complex, India’s second-highest-ranked singles player showcased a tenacious performance, signaling his ambition for a significant run in the tournament.

Hosted by the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association under the guidance of the All India Tennis Association, the Delhi Open is an ATP Challenger 75 event played on hard courts with a prize pool of USD 100,000. The singles tournament champion also earns 75 vital ATP points.

Coming off his contribution to India’s victory in the Davis Cup 2025 World Group I Playoffs against Togo, Mukund began his 2025 Delhi Open campaign on a challenging note, losing the first set 4-6 to Wayenburg, who entered the main draw as a lucky loser from qualifying. Nevertheless, he relied on a robust service game in the second set, winning 6-2 after converting three out of four break points.

Building on this momentum, Mukund completely dominated the final set, breaking his opponent three times to secure a decisive 6-0 win. He is set to face Belgium’s Michael Geerts in the round of 16.

On another note, wildcard Ramkumar Ramanathan demonstrated signs of a similar comeback but ultimately fell short against Dalibor Svrcina. After losing the first set, Ramkumar mounted a strong challenge in the second, yet couldn’t maintain his momentum, resulting in a three-set loss.

Among the seeded players, third seed Tristan Schoolkate began strongly against Turkey’s Ergi Kirkin, winning the first set 6-0. Kirkin, however, responded in the second, pushing Schoolkate into a tense tiebreaker, which the Australian narrowly won 7(12)-6(10).

Sixth seed Shintaro Mochizuki, a 21-year-old emerging talent from Japan, who boasts the 2019 Wimbledon boys’ singles title, also progressed, clinching a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Denmark’s August Holmgren.

In other matches, France's Kyrian Jacquet defeated seventh seed Sho Shimabukuro of Japan in straight sets, while the UK's Jay Clarke comfortably overcame his opponent Masamichi Imamura, winning 6-1, 6-4.

Qualifier Andre Ilagan continued his impressive run in the tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Marek Gengel. Meanwhile, after a grueling two-hour battle, Australia’s James McCabe edged out Italy’s Enrico Dalla Valle in three sets.
