Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Jan 7 (NationPress) The Mumbai Indians, the reigning champions, are set to kick off their Women’s Premier League 2026 journey with a well-established and title-ready lineup. Experts have pinpointed the return of Amelia Kerr as a pivotal element in the franchise's pursuit of defending their championship. The team secured the New Zealand star for 3 crore during last year's WPL Mega Auction.
Former Indian wicketkeeper Saba Karim stated that Kerr was a primary focus for the Mumbai Indians during the auction as they aimed to reassemble their championship-winning roster.
“To recreate their successful title-winning side, Mumbai Indians recognized the necessity of bringing back one or two players they had let go. Their top priority was Amelia Kerr. She has delivered outstanding performances,” Karim mentioned on JioStar.
“The MI management must have felt a sense of disappointment having released her previously, which explains the higher investment to reacquire her. They aimed to bring back the core group that clinched the WPL title last season, and they have successfully achieved that. The financial commitment to Amelia Kerr is justified for MI,” he added.
Former Indian captain Mithali Raj shared a similar sentiment, describing the re-signing of Kerr as both a tactical and sentimental move for the franchise.
“Bringing back Amelia Kerr is also an emotional investment for Mumbai Indians. They wanted her back in a combination that has proven effective. With that core, Mumbai Indians have secured the title twice over three seasons, making it crucial to have her return,” Mithali stated.
Former Indian batter Anjum Chopra commended the overall composition of the Mumbai Indians squad, highlighting the blend of youth and experience as a significant advantage as they head into the new season.
“I am thrilled about the balance within the Mumbai Indians. They are entering with a strong mix of youth and experience. Retaining Amanjot Kaur is an intriguing decision, and with the talent MI consistently gathers, they will undoubtedly be a team to keep an eye on,” Chopra remarked.
The Mumbai Indians will commence their WPL 2026 campaign on January 9 against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, followed by a match against the Delhi Capitals at the same venue on January 10. They will also face the Gujarat Giants on January 13 and the UP Warriorz on January 15, both in Navi Mumbai.
Following that, the team will head to the BCA Stadium in Vadodara for the remainder of their matches. They will take on the Delhi Capitals on January 20, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on January 26, and wrap up their league campaign against the Gujarat Giants on January 30.
