Hardik Pandya Confirms Strategy: Mumbai Indians Bowl First Against KKR
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 29 (NationPress) Captain of the Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya, won the toss and opted to bowl first against the Kolkata Knight Riders during their inaugural match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.
In a positive turn, Mumbai welcomed back pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who had briefly traveled to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for a consultation. Bumrah was among the first players to begin his warm-up.
Both Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton practiced as wicketkeepers, but ultimately, the younger South African left-handed batter was chosen over his more experienced teammate.
Afghan spinner AM Ghazanfar was presented his debut cap before the MI team huddled together, which included cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. Sherfane Rutherford received his MI cap from fellow countryman and team icon Kieron Pollard, also making his debut alongside Shardul Thakur.
Cameron Green, the most expensive overseas player after KKR acquired him for INR 25.20 crore, is set to make his first appearance for KKR, joined by Finn Allen and Blessing Muzarabani, a Zimbabwean pacer who made a last-minute transition from the Pakistan Super League to the IPL.
Pandya commented on the pitch, noting it appears greener than usual, prompting their decision to bat first. "The pitch looks good. It's greener than what we're accustomed to, so we want to test it out. This is our stronghold, and the crowd is here to back us, so we aim to deliver an entertaining performance. Jassi will be there," he stated.
KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane expressed surprise at the grass coverage on the pitch, indicating they would have also chosen to bowl first.
