Mumbai, March 29 (NationPress) The captain of Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya, won the toss and chose to bowl first against Kolkata Knight Riders in their inaugural match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai this Sunday.

On the eve of the match, Mumbai received a significant boost as pace leader Jasprit Bumrah rejoined the team after a brief visit to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for a consultation. Bumrah was one of the first players to mark his run-up.

Both Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton practiced as wicketkeepers, but ultimately, the younger South African left-handed batter/wicketkeeper was favored over his more experienced teammate.

Afghanistan’s enigmatic spinner AM Ghazanfar received his debut cap just before the MI squad huddled, which included the iconic Sachin Tendulkar. Sherfane Rutherford, who was awarded his MI cap by fellow countryman and team legend Kieron Pollard, is also making his debut alongside Shardul Thakur.

Cameron Green, the most expensive overseas player ever after KKR acquired him for INR 25.20 crore, will be making his first appearance for KKR, joined by Finn Allen and Blessing Muzarabani, the Zimbabwean pacer who made a last-minute switch from the Pakistan Super League to the IPL.

Pandya noted that the pitch appears greener than usual, prompting their decision to bat first.

"This looks like a good pitch. The grass is more than we’re accustomed to, so I want to see how it plays out. This is our fortress, and the entire crowd is here to support us. We aim to play quality cricket and entertain them. Jassi will be in action," he stated.

KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane expressed surprise at the pitch's grassy condition, indicating they would have opted to bowl first as well.
