Richard Pybus backs Mohammad Nabi to keep contributing in available formats
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Afghanistan head coach Richard Pybus has firmly backed veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi, stating that the experienced campaigner still has a meaningful role to play in the formats he is available for. Pybus described Nabi as a 'disciplined and meticulous' professional whose physical conditioning and desire continue to impress the team management.
Pybus's Backing for Nabi
The remarks come after Nabi was dropped from Afghanistan's T20I squad for the upcoming tri-nation series against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, fuelling speculation that the senior player may be nearing the end of his international career.
'I think Nabi's got something to contribute in the formats which he's available for,' Pybus said. 'He is an incredible cricketer and he keeps himself in absolutely fantastic shape. He's very disciplined, and obviously his record for Afghanistan stands out. He's hugely respected not only for what he's done in the past, but also the way that he just conducts himself as a professional. He's meticulous.'
Pybus also highlighted the data gathered from GPS tracking during training sessions. 'In terms of his physical conditioning, even though he's a mature cricketer, he really is in good shape and it was really positive to see. We get the data back when we're tracking the guys with the GPS and he held up really well,' he added.
Hunger and Desire the Key Factors
The Afghanistan coach emphasised that consistent performance remains the benchmark for all players, regardless of experience. 'You know like any cricketer, you've got to consistently perform and he's as aware of that as anybody else but I really do think he still has plenty to contribute. I think the main thing as you get older is hunger and desire. I look forward to his career moving forward and I'm looking forward to working with him,' Pybus said.
Notably, Nabi's record for Afghanistan across formats is among the most decorated in the country's cricket history, making his T20I omission a significant talking point within the cricketing fraternity.
Afghanistan's Busy Schedule in UAE
Before the tri-series gets underway, Afghanistan are set to play a one-off Test match against Bangladesh from 9–13 October at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The ODI Tri-Nation Series involving Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe will then run from 17–23 October in the UAE. The opening two matches will be held in Abu Dhabi, before the series moves to Sharjah for the remaining two fixtures.
Afghanistan's Test Ambitions Against Bangladesh
Pybus sees the one-off Test as a valuable benchmark for his side's development in the longest format. Bangladesh arrive in the UAE buoyed by a historic Test series in Australia, where they ended the two-match contest with a 1-1 scoreline.
'Now coming and playing against Bangladesh, who are coming off a successful tour to Australia, is a good opportunity for us to check in where we're at in Test format,' Pybus said. He also pointed to Afghanistan's domestic red-ball competition as solid preparation: 'What's been good for us is the guys coming out of playing in the first-class red-ball competition back in Afghanistan. So we've had plenty of guys playing the long format and getting that very particular type of cricket fitness.'
Pybus underlined the team's focus on innings construction — both at the individual and collective level — as Afghanistan continue to build their Test identity. With a packed UAE schedule ahead, how Nabi fits into the ODI setup and beyond will be closely watched.
