New Delhi, Feb 9 (NationPress) Namibia’s left-arm pace spearhead Ruben Trumpelmann believes that the bowlers will play a pivotal role in determining the outcomes of the ongoing Men’s T20 World Cup as his team gears up to commence their Group A challenge against the Netherlands at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.

Trumpelmann has displayed exceptional form since the start of the 2024 tournament, securing 17 wickets in 12 innings at an impressive strike rate of 13.9. His height and ability to generate seam movement make him a vital asset for Namibia with the new ball, and he is also known for his effectiveness in the death overs.

"The warm-up match against Scotland in Bengaluru was quite a run-fest. As a bowler, you need to have some grit, to be truthful. Your skills must be on point. While the conditions in Nepal were more conducive to spin, I don't anticipate much turn or seam in these Indian conditions during the World Cup," Trumpelmann stated.

"As a bowling unit, we must hone our skills. Our approach will be straightforward, and execution will be critical. Staying ahead of the batter is essential. In this tournament, the bowlers will propel teams further, potentially leading to victory," he explained during an exclusive interview with IANS.

After their match against the Netherlands, Namibia will face co-hosts and defending champions India on Thursday. Following India's narrow escape against the USA, Trumpelmann expressed both excitement and apprehension about the upcoming challenge against the Suryakumar Yadav-led team in their home ground.

"Competing against India is always a remarkable experience. They're an outstanding team, and it's a perfect opportunity to test your skills. Participating in a World Cup in India is phenomenal, especially with around 75,000 fans creating an electrifying atmosphere," he remarked.

"As a team, we are eager to showcase our abilities and be competitive. Cricket can be unpredictable; anything can happen. As a child, dreaming of playing in a World Cup, experiencing it in India is the ultimate dream," he added.

Not long after qualifying for this prestigious event, Namibia achieved a significant milestone by defeating neighboring South Africa by four wickets in their inaugural game at the new stadium in Windhoek last October.

"That victory against the Proteas is memorable, especially as it marked our first official game at the new stadium. Hosting a Test nation like South Africa was extraordinary, with a packed crowd of about 4,000 to 5,000 people filling the stands," Trumpelmann shared.

"Speaking from personal experience, it was an emotional match that we will cherish forever," he added, noting his background in South Africa’s domestic league before representing Namibia, his father’s homeland.

Following their World Cup qualification, Namibia participated in some ODI World Cup League matches. While others took some time off, Trumpelmann played in the Nepal Premier League and enjoyed a brief break in December. After a training camp in Cape Town, Namibia headed to Dubai for two matches against Afghanistan and one against Italy.

Namibia is making its fourth consecutive appearance in the T20 World Cup, a remarkable feat for a team that has yet to advance beyond the initial round. However, Trumpelmann believes the squad has the potential to reach the Super Eights, especially with Associate nations increasingly challenging larger teams in the early stages of the tournament.

"The one time we made it to the Super 12, the format was different. I genuinely think we are a strong T20 team. Our camp and team are filled with confidence, and we aim to make a significant impact. The key will be to stick to our fundamentals and outshine the competition in that area," he asserted.

"We are thrilled about this World Cup and anticipate making some upsets, as we have been preparing for this over the past few months. We recently secured a comfortable victory over Afghanistan in one of our warm-up matches. We possess all the necessary tools; we just need to consolidate our performance to progress to the Super 8," he explained.

Namibia has enhanced its coaching staff by bringing in Gary Kirsten, who led India to victory in the 2011 ODI World Cup, as a consultant. Kirsten's extensive knowledge of subcontinental conditions has greatly benefited the team, which has never played international cricket in India and Sri Lanka.

"Gary brings a wealth of experience, particularly in India, having coached the national team. He's a fantastic individual to work with, straightforward and approachable, always willing to share his insights," Trumpelmann noted.

"Our team enjoys spending time with him, gleaning from his experiences and thought processes. Our coaching staff has maintained a consistent approach, which is a positive sign of unity in our direction," he added.

Under new coach Craig Williams, who succeeded Pierre de Bruyn, Namibia has undergone a cultural transformation that Trumpelmann believes has unlocked the squad's potential. "We had significant success under Pierre, and he is an excellent coach. However, Craig's arrival has offered a refreshing new beginning. He is familiar with the players and has been a friend for many years, taking on a different role now," he explained.

"This shift has fostered a safe environment for players to express themselves fully. Craig has brought a positive change to the camp. It's essential to introduce fresh perspectives occasionally to reinforce concepts that may have been overlooked," he added.

"We are enjoying our time under Craig's leadership, along with the support of Justin Kemp, Gary, Evert Laubscher, and Sean Novak. Our backroom staff is incredibly passionate about cricket and Namibia, and we are excited for what lies ahead," he concluded.

The majority of Namibia's squad has remained intact since 2021, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie. "A significant part of our success stems from our close-knit team. Most of us have been together for four World Cup campaigns since 2021," Trumpelmann said.

"The bond we share, the time spent training, and the experiences we share make us special. We play not just as teammates but as friends, and the support from our small nation makes us feel empowered and motivated," he added.

Trumpelmann also contributes with the bat, typically coming in during the final overs as a power hitter. With usually only 10 to 20 deliveries to face, he understands the importance of making an immediate impact.

"I consider myself a reliable finisher in those last few overs. I take pride in my ability to contribute significantly during those crucial moments. I enjoy that responsibility and embrace the challenge," he stated.

"It's about maximizing our success from the limited opportunities we have. It's akin to bowling at times—a challenging job. However, I relish the task and won’t complain," he added.

Trumpelmann has taken 13 wickets in T20 World Cups thus far, trailing only all-rounder David Wiese, who has 14 wickets. Based on his insights, one can expect him and the rest of the bowling line-up to shoulder significant responsibilities in this World Cup.

"For us, there are numerous discussions on how to excel under these conditions. It will be challenging. As a young player or fast bowler, maintaining composure after being hit for boundaries is crucial. You might deliver your best ball, yet the risk of being hit remains. If we can stay calm and progress as a team, we have a bright future ahead," he concluded.
