Mumbai, Jan 12 (NationPress) Following a narrow defeat by four runs against the Gujarat Giants, Nandini Sharma from the Delhi Capitals praised the team’s relentless spirit, emphasizing that their determination to fight until the final moment was truly admirable.

In pursuit of a challenging target of 210, the Delhi Capitals concluded their innings at 205 for 5 within the allotted 20 overs, remaining competitive right up to the last ball. The batting effort was spearheaded by Lizelle Lee, who scored 86 runs off 54 deliveries, and a rapid 77 off 38 balls from Laura Wolvaardt. On the bowling front, Nandini Sharma made a mark with exceptional figures of 5 for 33. Notably, she became the first uncapped Indian player to achieve a hat-trick and the first Indian to claim a five-wicket haul in the Women’s Premier League, taking four wickets in the final over.

Reflecting on the thrilling match, Nandini stated, “We remained in contention till the end. Everyone put forth their best effort, and we were very close. Such things are part of cricket, but the way the team battled was very encouraging.”

She expressed gratitude for the guidance from skipper Jemimah Rodrigues during the game, adding, “Jemi kept encouraging me to give my all. Her continuous support was instrumental in helping me maintain my composure.”

Discussing the mentorship received from seasoned players, Nandini shared, “Marizanne Kapp has been a great source of guidance. She advises me on the pitch conditions, scenarios, and optimal lengths to bowl. Having such experienced players supporting you simplifies the process.”

Delving into her journey and the evolution of her bowling skills, Nandini remarked, “My elder brother played cricket and attended an academy regularly, which inspired me to start at a young age. I began at eight but initially had limited opportunities. After taking a break, I returned and trained with a coach who taught me essential skills, especially bowling bouncers. Post-lockdown, I switched coaches and began practicing with boys, which motivated me to enhance my pace and develop variations. For the last year, I've been training mainly with my family, who have provided immense support.”

Pointing out the lessons learned at this competitive level, the young pacer noted, “At this level, batters can score off good deliveries as well, so it’s crucial to remain composed and focus on execution. I’ve learned to tailor my bowling to the batter and the situation, and each match offers new insights.”

Highlighting the significance of the WPL for emerging fast bowlers, Nandini remarked, “This tournament provides young talents the opportunity to showcase their skills. Challenges, injuries, and tough times are part of the journey, but perseverance is key.”

The Delhi Capitals are gearing up to face the UP Warriorz in their next WPL 2026 match on Wednesday, looking to capitalize on the positives gained thus far.
