Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Abhishek Nayar on 23 May heaped praise on wrist spinner Varun Chakravarthy, calling his determination to play through multiple injuries a mark of exceptional character. Chakravarthy has been bowling in visible discomfort after sustaining a hairline fracture in his foot — the latest in a string of injuries that has included two broken fingers during IPL 2026.

Chakravarthy's Injury Ordeal

The spinner's foot injury was sustained when a ball struck him during KKR's clash against the Delhi Capitals. His continued participation despite the hairline fracture has sparked debate over player welfare, with critics questioning whether the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has done enough to protect players from overuse in the expanded ten-team tournament.

Nayar, speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday's fixture at Eden Gardens, was emphatic in his admiration. 'I do not think my words will do justice to it. For him to go through injury, endure a difficult start to the season, and then come back into form is a testament to how strong he is as a character. He has already broken quite a few bones during this tournament, specifically two fingers, and now his toe,' Nayar said.

What Nayar Said About Chakravarthy's Motivation

The KKR coach was clear that Chakravarthy's decision to push through is driven by his emotional bond with the franchise rather than any external pressure. 'He is very emotional when it comes to this team and everyone associated with it. That is the thought process behind his wanting to continue rather than forcing himself to do so. Sometimes players are not keen to push through, but he has been very keen because of the love he has for the city and the franchise,' Nayar added.

Notably, Chakravarthy had a difficult start to the season before rediscovering his form — making his comeback all the more significant for a side still chasing a playoff berth.

Raghuvanshi Ruled Out, KKR Seek a Replacement

Adding to KKR's injury concerns, Angkrish Raghuvanshi has been ruled out with a concussion and a finger fracture ahead of the Eden Gardens clash. Nayar acknowledged the loss was significant, given Raghuvanshi's dual role as a batter and wicketkeeper. 'He has been such an integral part of the side, not only with the bat but also as a wicketkeeper behind the stumps. We have not spoken much about it because that is how good he has been, but it is a difficult spot to fill,' he said.

Manish Pandey stepped up at number three in Raghuvanshi's absence, and Nayar indicated the vacancy could be an opportunity for one of KKR's young wicketkeepers to make a mark.

Saurabh Dubey's Breakout IPL Season

Nayar also singled out young pacer Saurabh Dubey for praise, describing his maiden IPL campaign as a story of perfect timing and maturity. Dubey was not originally part of the squad but caught the coaching staff's eye at the D.Y. Patil tournament. 'Saurabh has been tremendous. He has shown a lot of maturity and bowled some very critical overs during the tournament. He should be very proud of what he has done, and everyone in the franchise is extremely proud of him as well,' Nayar said.

Dubey's most notable contribution came in a spell against the Mumbai Indians, and Nayar positioned him primarily as a new-ball bowler — a different profile from the all-phase role previously filled by Vaibhav.

Sunday's match against the Delhi Capitals at Eden Gardens represents one of KKR's last realistic chances to enter the playoffs.
