IPL 2026: Chakaravarthy Highlights Powerplay Issues for KKR Before RR Match
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 19 (NationPress) Kolkata Knight Riders’ spinner Varun Chakaravarthy acknowledged that the team's struggles during the powerplay have significantly impacted their performance this season. He remains optimistic about finding his rhythm ahead of the upcoming IPL 2026 match against the Rajasthan Royals at the Eden Gardens this Sunday.
After winning the toss, RR chose to bat first in the 28th match of the tournament, putting additional focus on KKR's bowling strength in their home venue. Chakaravarthy, who had to sit out several matches earlier this season due to an injury, openly discussed his fitness and readiness for the game.
"I feel confident following the last match, as I had been in and out due to injuries sustained while playing, including a few fractures in my left hand. I'm still managing it, but I am working hard to regain my rhythm,” he shared with the broadcasters prior to the match.
In spite of KKR’s winless start to the season, the mystery spinner emphasized the positive atmosphere within the team, attributing it to the support staff who have been instrumental in keeping spirits high during this challenging time.
"Surprisingly, the support staff have managed us exceptionally well, including the coaches. They have kept our morale uplifted, which is crucial. All we can do is focus on what we can control, knowing that not everything is within our grasp,” he explained.
Chakaravarthy identified the powerplay phase as a critical area needing improvement. "I believe the powerplay, both in batting and bowling, is where we are falling short, and it’s essential for us to concentrate on it,” he asserted.
Looking ahead to the conditions at Eden Gardens, he shared his thoughts on how the pitch and match timing could affect the outcome of the game.
"Regardless, Eden Gardens is a high-scoring venue. You can usually expect scores above 180+. I think batting second could be advantageous, while bowling first might yield different results,” he remarked.
