Kolkata, March 21 (NationPress) The reigning champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), are set to return to the renowned Eden Gardens for their opening match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League 2025 on Saturday.

Varun Chakaravarthy, the mystery spinner who played a pivotal role in KKR’s triumph last season, emphasized the importance of identifying a consistent playing XI for their title defense. He stated that if the team can discover the right combination early in the tournament, their prospects will be promising.

“Our squad looks strong. The focus is on identifying the right players and ensuring they perform consistently. If we can establish a consistent core in the initial three matches, our chances for success this season will significantly increase,” Chakaravarthy noted.

During the recent T20I series against England, Chakaravarthy took 14 wickets across five matches, earning the title of Player of the Series for his outstanding bowling in January.

After joining the ODI squad against England, he secured a spot in the Champions Trophy lineup, becoming part of a formidable spin quartet alongside Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel in India's victorious campaign.

Chakaravarthy was the second highest wicket-taker in the Champions Trophy, claiming nine wickets in four matches. His remarkable figures of 5-42, achieved in just his second ODI match, helped India secure a win against New Zealand in their final group match.

“The key lies in achieving consistency, which is challenging to perfect. I am continuously working hard to reach that goal. Additionally, I am developing a few new deliveries that I hope will perform well in the upcoming matches,” Chakaravarthy stated.

KKR is aiming to extend their winning streak against RCB, having secured victories in their last four encounters. With a favorable head-to-head record of 20-14, the defending champions are eager to begin their title defense with a win.

Reflecting on the factors that enhance his performance against RCB, Chakaravarthy remarked, “There’s nothing specific; rather, the circumstances of those matches allowed me to take wickets. In each of those games, the conditions and situations were advantageous, enabling me to achieve the best results possible.”
