Kolkata, April 19 (NationPress) Bowler Varun Chakaravarthy showcased his return to form with a stellar Player of the Match performance in Kolkata Knight Riders’ victory over Rajasthan Royals. He discussed the tough period preceding the match, indicating that when a wicket doesn’t favor bowlers, it’s natural for them to concede runs. He reassured that there’s no cause for concern regarding his form or the distracting ‘outside noise.’

After facing criticism due to a lackluster showing in an ICC tournament against South Africa, Varun put his recent challenges in context, asserting that inconsistency is a typical part of a bowler’s career in contemporary cricket.

“Just because I claimed three wickets today, I’m not inclined to make grand claims. It's the essence of the game. If the next pitch offers little assistance, every spinner will face challenges. Initially, all spinners were struggling. As the surface begins to slow down, we find our effectiveness. It’s simply the nature of cricket, and it’s not something we can alter,” Varun expressed during the press conference following the match.

Varun recognized that the KKR team’s variable performances and outside criticisms might have affected their approach at times, but emphasized that their collective effort ultimately bore fruit.

“Yes, many factors come into play when we aren’t winning, and external criticism can impact players. But today, we emerged victorious. There are certainly areas for improvement. We began this tournament with numerous injuries that hampered us before it even commenced. I must commend our coaches, especially Abhishek Nayar. Leading a team in such trying conditions requires immense courage and effort. Building back up will take time, but gradually, through small victories, we will find our way back,” he stated.

Reflecting on the emotional significance of their win, Varun noted the profound impact it had on the team atmosphere, saying, “It was extremely significant. I observed many tears today, something we didn’t experience during our IPL triumph in 2024.”

On a tactical note, the mystery spinner reiterated his strategy of maintaining aggressive lines when conditions are favorable.

“When the pitch shows any assistance, I revert to my strengths, which focus on attacking the stumps. However, when the pitch offers little, bowlers tend to search for answers, becoming confused and uncertain, and this happens to everyone. Even the best can’t be judged solely on one match, whether good or bad,” he remarked.

Despite a modest first-innings score, Varun felt both teams misjudged the pitch slightly.

“Typically, it tends to slow down. I wouldn’t say it slows dramatically, but today, I sensed it was a 190-run wicket. Both teams struggled with their batting, leaning too much towards aggression when a more measured approach could have yielded better results. Scoring 190 runs was definitely achievable. But this win is crucial for us. In the latter half of the IPL, we will build on the positives from this match,” Varun mentioned.

He also discussed strategic conversations regarding his bowling role, praising the team environment for its support during tough times.

“Yes, there were extensive discussions on when I should bowl, whether in the powerplay or after. However, once I regain my form, I feel more assured. That was the plan, and Sunny has been performing well during the powerplay. Our plans will remain adaptable; I might bowl in the powerplay or Sunny might. Ultimately, the coaching staff deserves recognition for shielding us from external noise. There were numerous unfounded judgments floating around, and in such times, a strong core is essential for support,” he commented.

Varun also shared how he has been coping with multiple injuries throughout the tournament, stating, “Unfortunately, I fractured one of my fingers before the first match and sustained another fracture in a different match. My left hand is affected, making fielding nearly impossible. I'm managing, but it’s somewhat painful.”

Addressing rumors regarding changes in his bowling style, he clarified that his fundamental approach remains unchanged.

“I haven’t altered my speed. It remained the same when I was taking wickets, nor did I change my length. The only adjustment has been in my line of attack—focusing more on cramping lines. I’m working on all variations, not just sticking to the stumps. My approach hasn’t changed,” he explained.

Finally, he attributed previous struggles to unhelpful pitch conditions rather than personal faults.

“There was no error on my part; the pitch simply wasn’t conducive. I'm hard on myself, and when I don’t perform, I analyze what went wrong. The conditions were unfavorable for spinners. Other spinners faced the same challenges. It’s a relief that there’s now something for spinners, and I hope it continues,” Varun concluded.

When queried about the significance of home advantage and whether the team would prefer similar pitches in future games at Eden, Varun emphasized the importance of adaptability.

“Regarding the wicket, there’s been much debate about its nature. I’m unsure who decides the pitch conditions. However, we are prepared for whatever comes our way. Our mindset is to be ready for any wicket,” he concluded.
