IPL 2026: Nayar Calls Green's Bowling Absence 'Unfortunate'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 1 (NationPress) - Head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Abhishek Nayar, expressed that it is unfortunate that Australian all-rounder Cameron Green has yet to bowl in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). He emphasized that the franchise's long-term strategy is to position Green as a potential successor to Andre Russell.
Green was acquired by KKR for a staggering Rs 25.2 crore during last year's IPL auction. However, he did not bowl an over in KKR's season opener, which ended in a six-wicket loss to the Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium. Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed that his bowling is currently restricted due to a lower back injury, with a recovery timeline of approximately 10-12 days.
“There are instances that are simply beyond our control, and that’s the nature of sports. We always aim for the best-case scenarios. Yes, having back-ups is crucial; we select players based on their capabilities,” Nayar mentioned during the pre-match press conference before their upcoming game against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens this Thursday.
Nayar elaborated on the franchise's decision-making process during auctions, acknowledging the importance of a player’s long-term potential. “Choosing a player isn’t just a short-term decision. We assess what they’ve achieved over the years and the skills they bring,” he said.
“The sport is fascinating in that we might select a player known for specific skills, yet they may not perform as expected. Nevertheless, Cameron Green, as a cricketer and all-rounder, is integral to our plans.”
He also mentioned the importance of considering injuries and fitness updates while affirming their investment in Green’s comprehensive abilities. “During the auction and throughout the tournament, decisions are made with an eye on the future. What lies ahead is uncertain, but we believe in the player’s potential and what he can contribute at his best,” Nayar concluded.
In addition, Nayar expressed confidence in wrist-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, who has been struggling to regain form since the Super Eights of the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup. “Mentally, I believe he is in a much better place than in previous years. This challenge is significant, but he has faced tougher times before,” he stated.
“While expectations have risen due to his past performances for Team India, we as a franchise and support team continue to back him. Teams may be playing him well now, but that doesn’t indicate he cannot bounce back. We hope fans will support him too, and I am confident he will return to form,” Nayar added.
