IPL 2026: Finch Observes Panic in Green's Performance Slump
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 7 (NationPress) Cameron Green's sluggish start to the IPL 2026 season is becoming a focal point, as the high-priced allrounder has yet to establish consistency with the Kolkata Knight Riders after three matches. Former Australian captain Aaron Finch shared his insights on Green's performance, indicating that although not every dismissal can be attributed to him, there are evident issues with his technique.
Acquired for a staggering Rs. 25.20 crore during the auction, Green entered the tournament with lofty expectations but has struggled to leave a significant mark thus far.
The 26-year-old kicked off his campaign with a brisk 18 off 10 balls against his previous team, the Mumbai Indians, but has failed to capitalize on that momentum. He was run out for just 2 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad due to a mix-up, and in KKR's rain-affected match versus the Punjab Kings, he was dismissed cheaply again, caught behind off Xavier Bartlett on only his second ball, even though only 3.4 overs were completed in that game.
"One of those dismissals was a run-out, which isn’t entirely on him. Nonetheless, he has missed out twice. There seems to be a bit of panic; he doesn't appear to be the same player as before. Remember when he opened for MI, he displayed a completely different intent," Finch commented to ESPNCricinfo.
"He was dominant at the crease. Now, he seems hesitant. Don't push him down the order; either move him up or consider giving him a break," Finch suggested.
Finch also criticized KKR's strategic decisions during the rain-affected game against the Punjab Kings, especially their choice to bat first under gloomy, rain-impacted conditions.
"Winning the toss and opting to bat after the pitch has been covered for a day, especially with rain in the forecast, is utterly nonsensical. That raises alarm bells for me. It's not merely about being two down for 25; it's the fact that 'we shouldn’t be batting.' They’re making poor decisions even with all the information available," he elaborated.
He further discussed how match conditions and context should have informed their decision-making, stating, "With cloud cover present and rain expected, especially after three hours of rain, someone must have indicated that 'it might rain later' — perhaps it would be wiser to chase. The DLS method benefits the team batting second. They had all that data, so I can't grasp how they decided to bat first."
As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on Green to regain his form and validate his hefty price tag, while KKR may also need to reevaluate both their batting strategy and on-field decisions.
